Geordie’s fight against Leukaemia
The Halverson family have suffered more in 2020 than most will in a lifetime. This young family have shown an immense amount of strength and unity in a year, experiencing more challenges and heartache than most could handle.
In December 2019, the family of four drove down from their home in Canberra to spend Christmas with Andrea’s family (the Boons) and enjoy a family holiday. Over the next two weeks, Andrea would lose her mother, suddenly and unexpectedly, and would also be given the diagnosis no parent wants to hear. Their beautiful daughter, Geordie, had cancer.
With a breastfeeding seven month old, the family spent most of the following months in hospital, suppressing the grief of losing a mother and watching their two year old suffer through lifesaving treatment for Leukaemia. And, of course, they endured all of this through a global pandemic. To this day, Andrea and the kids haven’t been able to return to their home in Canberra.
Over 2020, Gaz was fortunate enough to be able to keep his job and work from Melbourne in between hospital stays but in 2021 he needed to return to Canberra so he could continue to work and support his family. Currently, Gaz comes back to Melbourne to be with Andrea and the girls on Thursday night and returns to Canberra on a Sunday. Flights are often up to $400 ONE WAY, so he has been driving eight hours each way in his car or catching an over night bus every single week.
As you can imagine this is exhausting for him both physically and emotionally. It also means he has less time to be with his family and is less able to give Andrea MUCH needed support.
One of the main reasons I started this fundraiser was to ensure that they have the funds to buy return flights each week, something that is life changing for them right now. The family will also be needing to book Airbnb accommodation as their current arrangements run out in five weeks - this is another cost this fundraiser will assist with.
This family are extremely private and have been reluctant to accept this kind of help throughout this time. They are trying to manage this horrible situation with as little help as possible, but I want to show them that we are all behind them.
Any donation would help and if you could share this on your own page, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bec Johnson
