A Home for Kira - Finding a good home in the UK
Donation protected
Hi, we are Toni & Brian.
We work with dogs in the UK so they are special to us. In January 2024 we visited Sharm el-Sheikh from where we have previously rescued a street dog from being killed by staff at an apartment complex. 'Purdy' is now one of our four dogs.
While visiting Sharm we spent a day with Sibylle Zimmerman of Strays Sharm (https://www.facebook.com/sibylle.nadja ) visiting a number of the dog packs around Sharm and checking they had food, water and were generally ok.
In one small group we came across an injured Golden Retriever. The injuries were to her hind limbs and included punctures and tears indicative of attack by a dog or dogs either from behind or while she was trying to run from them. There were no injuries at her front end so there's no indication she fought back or defended herself. She's not a fighter and she's not doing well on the streets but she was a dream when we did some first aid for her on the street.
While giving some basic roadside first aid we determined that she really needed veterinary treatment so we took her off the street to a veterinary clinic where we paid for her treatment and a stay to recover. You can see below why we took her to the vet over a splash of antiseptic on the street.
To our immense surprise Dr. Albert thinks she's around 3 years old though the demeanour she had on the street was of an old dog. We gave her the name Kira for her stay at the veterinary clinic.
Working with dogs we know there are so many out there that need and deserve a good home but we have to say Kira is also one of them. She is a lovely dog. Even though in clear pain she came over to us humans as friendlies and solicited attention and affection and on top of that she let us help her like a dream when we started some basic first aid applying antiseptic to her wounds. Likewise at the vet clinic she was a dream to handle.
She is a Golden Retriever, she's not a street dog and Kira is right there as a beautiful dog who is just short a beautiful home and we have resolved to achieve that for her. There is no credible rescue set-up in Sharm so we decided to discount that and aim to find her a forever home in the UK.
Thanks to the tag on her ear we found that in November 2023 Kira was captured and neutered and she looked like this. A happy looking dog but recently dumped. THIS is the Kira that we are building back and will be a wonderful dog for someone.
Funds raised will be used for the medical, accommodation (quarantine) and transport costs that will be accrued to bring Kira to the UK. Any funds raised over those costs will go to Strays Sharm to help specifically with any medical and feeding costs for those dogs that live their short lives on the streets of Sharm el-Sheikh. There is a capture/netuer programme in place to try and keep numbers down. No monies will be used for salaries or personal expenses, they will go on direct animal care related costs only.
Kira is currently under the care of Dr. Albert Gabra at the Sinai Veterinary Clinic and will either stay there or move into other pet accommodation for a quarantine period to ensure that she meets all the medical requirements for travel to the UK. This will take approximately 4 months.
So far around £215 has been spent on Kira's treatment as well as vaccinations, tests and accommodation. Board & lodging for 4 months will be approximately £600 and the remainder will be for transport (though we don't have specific costs yet).
You can follow Kira's journey or apply to be her forever home on her FB or Insta
So we are looking for two things. Donations to help fund Kira's care and transport to the UK and someone special to step up and be her new forever home when she comes across in May 2024.
Thank you for reading and thank you for any help you can give whether it's donating, offering a home or even just sharing this and giving others a chance to know Kira.
