A Home for Lei Lesu's Family
Donation protected
In September, I was connected with Leiloa Lesu. Lei was a very quiet woman, soft spoken and so hopeful for finding the right home for her family. You see, Lei and her husband, Uluvalu, or as we call him "Pete," care for their 45-year son, who is a quadriplegic. Lei had been searching for the right home but never found it. She told me how her son loved to play sports and after high school was diagnosed with a spinal disease that ultimately led to his paralysis. They were not able to lift their son very often and when they do manage to get him into his wheel chair, there was really no place for him to go in their current rental.
It was challenging to find someone to stay with their son while Lei looked at homes, so before inviting her to view any listings, we previewed homes for her. We knew they needed ADA access for the wheelchair, and a room large enough to accommodate her son's bed and all of his medical equipment and supplies.
Fast-forward to mid-October. While searching the MLS, I found a home that just listed and caught my eye due to the ramp leading to the front door. I searched the photos and called the listing agent immediately. I could not have been luckier than to have the amazing Cindy Fraze be the listing agent. I explained the Lesu's situation and she strongly encouraged me to view the home. I called Lei and told her she had to see this home.
God was listening to Lei because we found a home that had a ramp to the front door, a ramp in the garage, a graded slope for a wheel chair from the kitchen to the living room, a ramp leading to the backyard with plenty of space to roam, and a room large enough to accommodate her son's bed and all of his medical equipment. It even had wall-to-wall storage space for his supplies. Lei loved it and wanted Pete to see it. I met Pete the following day and he said to write it up.
About two weeks into escrow Lei became ill. It was difficult to speak with her on the phone. The following week, Lei was admitted into the hospital with COVID. Pete also became ill but was quarantined at home. Their home buying process was stalled. Fortunately, Cindy and her sellers have been very understanding and the sellers were willing to wait for Lei's recovery. Sadly, it never came. On Sunday, Pete called me to tell me he lost his wife. I was devastated for him and his family.
After a few days of speaking with his kids and making arrangements, Pete called this morning and said his family still wants to pursue the home, but after the funeral. Thankfully, the sellers are still willing to wait for Pete, and in fact, according to Cindy, insist they must have this home.
The dilemma now is that Pete is struggling for closing costs to purchase their new home. He now has to pay for a funeral for his lovely wife, Lei. We are doing all we can to contribute to assist Pete and his family during this very difficult time. Our team has decided to start this GoFundMe Page to help Pete with his closing costs and, if possible, with funeral arrangements. Lei's funeral is November 30th. If you would like to contribute, in any amount, we believe that Lei would be very happy to know her family has their own home - thanks to her!
