We are Arie Rodriguez and Shlomit, a Jewish family from Latin America who decided to emigrate to Israel in 2023, driven by a deep longing to return to the Promised Land and instill in our two young children a sense of belonging, love for our people, our culture, and our land. We are a united, traditional family, steadfast in our Jewish faith. To you, reading this now, we extend our deepest gratitude for your time and generosity. Emigrating is never an easy decision—many can relate to that. But for us, knowing it wasn’t just a move but a homecoming to the place where we truly belong gave us the courage to leave everything behind: family, friends, comforts, jobs, a good home, and so many personal possessions. We did it with the hope of realizing not just a goal, but a greater dream. Yet reality has not met our expectations. Upon arriving in Tel Aviv, we were detained at the airport for four days. We spent three nights sleeping on the floor, offering our children the few blankets we could find to protect them from the piercing cold. From the very beginning, we felt the burden of discrimination and indifference, despite identifying ourselves as Jews. To avoid deportation, we had to hire a specialized immigration lawyer. After a trial in a special airport court, we won our case and gained entry. But this process consumed much of our savings; the legal fees were staggering, and through a payment arrangement, we settled that debt a year later, thanks to HaShem.

Pero para nosotros, saber que no era solo una mudanza, sino un regreso al lugar al que verdaderamente pertenecemos, nos dio el valor para dejar todo atrás: familia, amigos, comodidades, trabajos, un buen hogar y tantas posesiones personales. We settled in a small town far from the country’s center, aiming to escape the steep cost of living in big cities. We promptly began the process to secure our citizenship, a right granted to us as Jews under Israel’s Law of Return. This law not only allows Jews worldwide to settle in Israel but also promises support for a dignified and effective integration. However, without proper guidance, the process is daunting. It took months to gather the required documents for the Ministry of the Interior. Meanwhile, we bore all expenses ourselves, as aid and benefits are only provided once citizenship is granted. Bit by bit, our remaining savings vanished.

When war broke out, we joined a foundation to help. For a while, we brought food, clothing, and support to the hardest-hit families. We also visited soldiers returning from the frontlines, offering warm meals, hugs, or simply a kind word. It felt like, however small, we were contributing.

Then our nightmare began. In mid-2024, a foundation in Israel made severe accusations against us, publishing our photos—including those of our children—and labeling us as missionaries and frauds. Our friends and family, who will surely read this appeal, can testify to our integrity, honesty, and commitment as Jews. This unleashed a torrent of online persecution that amplified the false claims and engulfed us in harassment. The hostility from certain organizations and individuals in Israel toward anything they link to Christians, evangelicals, Catholics, Messianics, or similar groups is overwhelming. The pressure was so intense that when we submitted our citizenship application to the Ministry of the Interior, they rejected us outright and issued an expulsion order. We had to hire another specialized lawyer. At first, the Ministry claimed our documents proving our Jewish identity were fake; our lawyer’s efforts forced them to retract that. Then they dismissed the documents as coming from unrecognized authorities; again, they relented after legal intervention. Finally, when they ran out of pretexts, they latched onto the missionary label—based on the foundation’s unfounded accusations—to block our application. In Israel, a “missionary” is someone who evangelizes minors or distributes the New Testament, acts that can lead to prison. This does not describe us: we live our Jewish faith like any observant Jew. It became clear that personal biases and agendas, fed by those false accusations and social media attacks, were derailing our case. After months of struggle, the Ministry issued another expulsion order. But we refused to surrender our rights as Jews, especially after all we’ve given up.

A mediados de 2024, una fundación en Israel hizo graves acusaciones contra nosotros, publicando nuestras fotos—incluidas las de nuestros hijos—y etiquetándonos como misioneros y fraudes. Nuestros amigos y familiares, que seguramente leerán este llamamiento, pueden dar fe de nuestra integridad, honestidad y compromiso como judíos. Al principio, el Ministerio afirmó que nuestros documentos que probaban nuestra identidad judía eran falsos; los esfuerzos de nuestro abogado los obligaron a retractarse. Luego descartaron los documentos por provenir de autoridades no reconocidas; nuevamente, cedieron tras la intervención legal. The accusations didn’t just jeopardize our citizenship process. In the town where we lived, fanatic Jews harassed us: we lost three chances to rent a home because our photos spread through community WhatsApp groups; our children faced insults and mistreatment from other youths. This forced us to move to another city, absorbing all the costs that entailed. We’ve launched a legal claim against the foundation that sparked this defamation, trusting that justice will soon address the damage done.

Las acusaciones no solo pusieron en peligro nuestro proceso de ciudadanía. En el pueblo donde vivíamos, judíos fanáticos nos acosaron: perdimos tres oportunidades de alquilar una casa porque nuestras fotos se difundieron en grupos de WhatsApp de la comunidad; nuestros hijos enfrentaron insultos y maltratos de otros jóvenes. Esto nos obligó a mudarnos a otra ciudad, absorbiendo todos los costos que eso implicó. With the latest expulsion order, we rehired the lawyer to appeal to a Regional Court. By then, our savings were gone, and without legal work authorization in Israel, our situation became unsustainable. Thanks to my profession, I can earn some income remotely online, meeting basic needs. But things deteriorated further. The lawyer handling our appeal suddenly shifted his stance: he told us our case was nearly hopeless and that he was starting to believe the accusations against us. We learned he never secured a protection order to prevent our deportation—a vital step in such cases. Frustrated by his lack of commitment, we hired a new lawyer. We discovered we’re not alone; other Jews close to us have endured similar persecution. Yet one person with a case like ours won in court; a judge affirmed her right as a Jew, regardless of personal beliefs. This gives us hope. If the Ministry accepts atheist Jews and homosexual Jews, why not us?

Con la última orden de expulsión, volvimos a contratar al abogado para apelar ante un Tribunal Regional. Para entonces, nuestros ahorros se habían agotado, y sin autorización legal para trabajar en Israel, nuestra situación se volvió insostenible. Gracias a mi profesión, puedo generar algunos ingresos de forma remota en línea, cubriendo necesidades básicas. Pero las cosas empeoraron aún más. El abogado que manejaba nuestra apelación cambió repentinamente de postura: nos dijo que nuestro caso era casi desesperado y que comenzaba a creer en las acusaciones contra nosotros. Descubrimos que nunca aseguró una orden de protección para evitar nuestra deportación, un paso vital en estos casos. Frustrados por su falta de compromiso, contratamos a un nuevo abogado. Descubrimos que no estamos solos; otros judíos cercanos a nosotros han soportado persecuciones similares. Sin embargo, una persona con un caso como el nuestro ganó en la corte; un juez afirmó su derecho como judía, independientemente de sus creencias personales. Esto nos da esperanza. Si el Ministerio acepta a judíos ateos y judíos homosexuales, ¿por qué no a nosotros?

Now we’re in a desperate plight, and this is where we appeal to your kindness. The first lawyer sued us for his full fees, despite completing only 30% of the work. With a friend’s help, we negotiated a payment plan, but the deadline is tight. Lacking fluency in the language or laws leaves us exposed. Meanwhile, we’ve hired a new lawyer to take up our case immediately, as we cannot go a day without legal representation. The legal costs have far exceeded our means. With G-d’s help and your generosity, we trust our rights will be upheld, and we can fulfill our dream of living fully as Jews in our land.
