A little town and it’s community need our help

As most of the country burns with its driest and hottest days since records began, there are a few small country towns in the north east corner of Victoria that are currently undergoing a very tough time. 

I know a lot of people are donating where they can, but I have set up a go fund me page for direct donations if you wish to help. 

all money raised will be put back towards the township of Corryong and surrounds to help families that have lost everything in the devastating fires and are needing our help money will also go towards fuel, water, clothing, equipment etc. 

Corryong is a town of about 1200 people. It’s the largest town in the community, but there are many other smaller towns that make up our once beautiful north east Victoria. Our closest bigger centre is Albury/Wodonga, 120km away through twisty roads of bush land and forest.

One of the great things about this place is the seclusion, and still pristine condition of the rivers and mountains. But that also means it’s easy to get cut off from the rest of the world. Cut off by road, or loss of power, or phone/internet. Usually they just get on with life when this happens, they do not complain, and they make do.

It is also a huge farming area, and so people live on properties which are not only their homes but their livelihoods

This community has spent the New Year battling one of the biggest fires to ever come through the district. Every single little town and area has been affected in some way. We have some bloody amazing firefighters who have risked their own lives and properties to save as much of others as possible. They have saved a lot of houses, but many have not been this lucky; some have lost everything and a lot of farms, sheds, stock and feed have been lost. This is their livelihood.

While battling the fire and protecting as many assets as possible has been top priority, the town has many needs to come. There is limited access by road and no power due to fallen lines, there is limited phone reception. The evacuation centre has minimal toilets. They are low on running water and food. People bulk buy food and meat and store in freezers when doing a ‘big shop’ in the city. Days of power outages mean this storage is gone. The local IGA shelves are bare. Everyone is chipping in to get these necessities into town. It will take time to fix the power lines into town, and then they will begin on the more remote properties. The same with getting fresh water supplies back up.

We are a small town but a big community with even bigger heart. We just want to do all we can to get it back up and running again.
