A local senior citizen in need

Randy is a lifelong Wantage resident, a true old timer. He has no family & doesn’t seem to know how to navigate for assistance. Visually when we would drive by we could see the house was in desperate need of repairs and hadn’t seen much activity. Then we started noticing him sitting in a car on the property. We came to learn he’s living out of his car that is broken down, with a space heater for warmth. The house has no water, no heat, just electric. He has a small corner of the house set up with a hot plate & microwave. The roof has about a 10x10 hole. It’s basically condemned. The last few days we have made many phone calls. The town was helpful but informed us it’s in foreclosure (which I don’t think Randy fully comprehends) Social Services provided me with a ton of numbers. They are aware of the situation but not much they can do. I haven’t been able to reach rental assistance but SS believes they are capped. He has a few neighbors that check in, bring hot meals, & help him food shop. Randy goes to dialysis but quite frequently his ride service does not show. I called the renal center & they confirmed this info.

So we have two goals for Randy

1) find him a used car to get himself back & forth to dialysis.

2) possible hotel accommodations until we can figure out subsidized housing. *since we don’t have a exact date of when the bank will take his property.

It’s a sad situation & now that we know all this info, we can’t turn a blind eye. We are hoping the community will come together to also help. Any amount would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
