A Memorial Bench for Penny Nichols and Friends

The last time I saw my friend, teacher and mentor Penny Nichols, she was already at the advanced stage of Hospice care, very close to transcending this planet she loved. The visit was wonderful, Penny had the presence of a holy person, she showed no fear or concern for what was going to come, she was in a space of love, gratitude, and acceptance.  One thing she requested of me.  She wanted to make sure that she would be remembered with a bench at the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.  I promised her that I would be sure that her wish would be fulfilled.   

Long Story Short:

Penny wanted a memorial bench at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

Every time we had songwriters camp beginning in January of 2011 after the death of Kenny Edwards, Penny would lead a “memorial walk” to a bench by the sea where departed friends would be remembered and a group photo would be taken.



The Friends of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve have very strict policies regarding Bench Placement at the Preserve.  They have placed 16 of the total of 17 benches allowed in the conservation agreement.  Placement of a dedicated bench requires a $50,000 donation.  Donors of $10,000 or $5,000 are also able to share a bench with up to two plaques with other donors. The bench that will hold the plaque with the line “Penny Nichols and Friends” is already built and placed, it is a beautiful stone bench overlooking the preserve. The bench and plaques will be monitored and maintained in perpetuity.


As an added incentive I am raffling a painting of the Cambria Bluffs among the people who donate to this remembrance for Penny.  Each $50 dollar donation will get you a chance at winning the painting, (maybe this one if I finish it; Retail Value of $1800) In addition for any donation of any amount, Penny will co-write a song with you if you come to sit with her at her bench, and you can keep all the credit!
