A Mental Health Book by David J. Daigle

David Daigle needs your help today!

The crowdfunding I am seeking will help me develop and publish the story of my dealing with and surviving an unexpected serious mental breakdown, which I have successfully recovered from. Since the book project relates directly to Mental Health, I believe my story will help others who are dealing with debilitating mental issues, as well as the many people who are providing personal and professional support.

The book will provide an intimate portrait of my experience from the initial breakdown, through the discovery of its causes and the long, difficult road to access the proper treatment provided by health professionals. It details with the struggle to regain control of my mental faculties through hospitalization, psychiatric sessions and drug therapy, dealing with my family's reaction and understanding, to my final emergence from the darkness back into the light of reality.

I want to make a point that this life-changing scenario can happen to anyone... young or old, rich or poor, from any background. I want to show how an individual's inner strength and commitment to regaining their sanity, can achieve remarkable life-restoring results.

In today’s complex, stress-filled world the issue of mental health is becoming an ever-increasing, important topic. In recent years, it has evolved through the support of social and traditional media and even from the business sector, into the development of an annual Mental Health Awareness Week, in many countries around the world. This global encouragement to generate awareness and help people who are struggling, has become my primary reason for writing this book, which will be titled: 'Enduring Insanity: When your mind turns against you, how resilient can you be?'.

I realize that many people and their families are experiencing and dealing with some of these debilitating illnesses and I want to let them know that there is real and effective help out there... and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Your financial support can make this book a reality and potentially help many people whom are suffering from mental health issues.

Why contribute to this project and what makes this book important?

▪ Today and any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness and 8% of adults will experience major depression at some point in their lives.

▪ By the age of 40, about 1 in 2 Canadians will have or have had a mental illness.

▪ 1 in 4 Canadians (25%) will have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime. In fact, anxiety is the most common mental illness in Canada.

▪ Around 1 in 10 men around the world experience Postpartum Depression after the birth of a child. Public awareness of the debilitating impact of Postpartum Depression on new moms has grown over the years, but many people don't realize it can affect new fathers too.

▪ The mortality rate due to suicide, directly linked to depression, among men, is 4 times the rate among women. It is estimated that for every completed suicide there are as many as 20 attempts.

The information above comes directly from the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada, the Survey on Living with Chronic Diseases in Canada and Statistics Canada.

Unfortunately, even with mental illness information being accessible, there still exists stigmas and discrimination surrounding mental illnesses. This presents serious barriers, not only to diagnose and treat mental illness, but also to accept it in our families and communities.

Where will your contributions go and how you can help?

It is my hope to raise $12,000.

A professionally-published book requires more than paper and pen.

The following are the approximate costs in publishing my book:

55% Print Publishing and eBook Conversion
15% Professional Developmental Editor
12% Copyeditor and Proofreader
10% Promotions and Marketing
5% Web Development
2.9% GoFundMe Payment Processing Fees

My goal is to not only publish an eBook but also to make hard copies available for individuals whom are suffering from this illness and whom may not have access to the Internet.

Many health care professionals highly recommend that patients unplug from the Internet or Social Media to help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which is good sound advice.

However, when you or a loved one are unexpectedly faced with this type of illness, the symptoms may be acute and you may be in such a critical state that having a hard copy of this book may be easier to reference, take with you and share with someone you really trust.

From my own experience, I was extremely confused when this illness struck me; I had a long list of symptoms and there were too many things floating around on the Internet that may or may not have helped me.

I became overwhelmed due to the complexity of my illness and my mind wasn’t steady enough to find a solution. Had I gained access to the right information or even found this type of material; I could have saved myself so much time in getting the right help much earlier from a health care professional.

What you may or may not know is that, if you or a loved one is hospitalized due to a major depression, most personal items, including access to your smartphone are locked and taken away.

Even though I bravely chose to voluntarily check myself into a mental hospital; I wasn’t aware ahead of time that this would happen. I essentially lost access to the outside world and the ability to do any research to help me find a possible solution. I desperately wanted to find the right answers and get back to my normal self.

If someone is having a difficult time articulating what is happening to them, I have included many useful examples in my book to help them or their loved ones, explain what might be happening to them or what might help them. Although my experience is unique, there still lies some common symptoms that any individual may be experiencing.

Your financial contributions will play a key part in making this book a reality and getting my message out to as many people as possible. With your support we could save many lives.

Sharing, posting and talking about this GoFundMe initiative with your family, friends, and anyone you know will help this project reach its goal and get more support.

Contributions at any level are graciously appreciated.

Mental illnesses are serious health issues that impact all of us.

Thanks so much for your support in helping me achieve my goal and being part of my story.
