A mother and daughter facing a tough battle far from home

Mayra, a 34-year-old international student in Melbourne, simply wanted to have a different kind of day – one filled with excitement, fun, and adrenaline. She decided to go skydiving, hoping for an unforgettable experience. But what was meant to be a joyful moment turned into a true tragedy.

During the landing, she suffered a serious accident that caused fractures to her T11 and T12 vertebrae, herniated discs in her C5 and C6 cervical vertebrae, an injury to her coccyx, and damage to some internal organs due to the impact. Since then, she has been treated in four different hospitals in Melbourne and is currently unable to move or care for herself.

She recently had a urinary catheter reinserted and still needs to wear nappies. She cannot walk. Doctors estimate that her hospitalisation could last between 4 and 12 months, depending on her recovery.

Faced with this difficult situation, her mother — an elderly woman — had to travel alone from Colombia on a tourist visa to be by her daughter’s side and care for her. Navigating a new country, with a different language and an unfamiliar city, has been a huge challenge. Even so, she has done it out of love and has been with Mayra every single day.

We are reaching out to you today because Mayra and her mother urgently need support to cover hospital expenses, as the student insurance does not cover certain medical procedures and surgeries. In addition, they are facing daily living costs such as rent, transport, food, and personal items. Their savings have already been exhausted, and while the medical matters are still being processed, the day-to-day expenses continue to pile up.

Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference during this incredibly difficult time.

Mayra, una estudiante internacional de 34 años en Melbourne, solo quería vivir un día distinto, lleno de emoción, diversión y adrenalina. Decidió lanzarse en paracaídas desde una avioneta con la esperanza de tener una experiencia inolvidable. Pero lo que debía ser un momento de alegría terminó en una verdadera tragedia.

Durante el aterrizaje sufrió un grave accidente que le provocó fracturas en las vértebras T11 y T12, hernias en las cervicales C5 y C6, lesión en el coxis y daños en algunos órganos internos por el impacto. Desde entonces ha sido tratada en cuatro hospitales diferentes en Melbourne, y actualmente no puede moverse ni valerse por sí sola.

Recientemente le colocaron nuevamente una sonda urinaria, y aún debe usar pañales. No puede caminar. Los médicos estiman que su hospitalización podría extenderse entre 4 y 12 meses, dependiendo de su evolución.

Ante esta dura situación, su madre —una mujer adulta mayor— tuvo que viajar sola desde Colombia, con visa de turista, para estar con su hija y cuidarla. Enfrentarse a un país desconocido, con otro idioma y una ciudad completamente nueva, ha sido un enorme reto. Aun así, lo ha hecho por amor, y ha estado cada día al lado de Mayra.

Hoy acudimos a ustedes porque Mayra y su madre necesitan ayuda urgente para cubrir los gastos hospitalarios, ya que el seguro estudiantil no cubre algunos procedimientos médicos y quirúrgicos. Además, enfrentan otros costos diarios como arriendo, transporte, alimentación y artículos personales. Los ahorros ya se han agotado, y mientras los temas médicos continúan en trámite, los gastos del día a día no se detienen.
