The History of Comuna 13

Once known as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world, Comuna 13’s story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community. Nestled in the hills of Medellín, Colombia, this area was plagued by violence, crime, and despair. Yet, amidst this adversity, its residents sparked a remarkable transformation—using art as a tool for healing and hope.

Today, Comuna 13 stands as a vibrant cultural hub, attracting tourists from around the globe. Its streets are alive with colorful murals, music, and stories that celebrate the spirit of its people. Art became a voice for the voiceless and a bridge for connection, shining a light on the potential for positive change even in the darkest times.

Our Vision: A Mural for Environmental Change

Building on Comuna 13’s legacy of impactful art, I’ve been invited to collaborate with a local painter and music artist to create a mural with a powerful environmental message. The piece will focus on plastic pollution in our oceans, highlighting the urgent need for action to protect our marine ecosystems. This isn’t just a mural; it’s a call to awareness, a celebration of creativity, and a spark for a broader environmental campaign.

In addition to the mural, my collaborators and I will produce a music video that amplifies this message. The music and visuals will weave together to tell a story that connects people to the beauty of our oceans and the threats they face due to plastic pollution. This project will also support a cleanup initiative in Comuna 13, bringing environmental awareness and community action together.

Join Us in Making an Impact

We are raising $500 USD to cover the costs of painting materials and production. Every contribution will directly support:

  • Paint and materials for the mural.

Any additional funds raised will go towards:

  • Supporting the thriving art community in Comuna 13.

  • Funding local cleanup initiatives to further the environmental message of this project.

Why This Matters

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. It is predicted that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. By creating this mural in Comuna 13—a place that has already shown the world the power of transformation—we aim to inspire action and connect communities to the global fight against ocean pollution.

This project is about more than art; it’s about leveraging creativity to foster change. Comuna 13’s story reminds us that transformation is possible when people come together, and we hope this mural will be a catalyst for both local and global impact.
