A New Heart For Scott Gerber
Donation protected
Scott Gerber was a heart failure patient since January 2013. He received a new heart on December 25, 2022. Here is his story....
Since his emergency heart surgery back in 2013, Scotty held off the dragons to live as much of a normal life as possible, and did well. He's a popular and well-loved local musician here in metro Atlanta, a retired (almost) IT pro, a wonderful kitty dad to our two rescue girls, and, most importantly, my life partner and husband of 41 years. The attached photo was taken as we quietly celebrated our anniversary one week before he was admitted to the hospital.
Earlier last year, his doctors told us his condition had progressed to the point that he needed a heart transplant.
He was admitted to Emory University Hospital on October 26, 2022. Some amazing technology sustained him while he waited for his new heart. He remained in the hosptial in the Cardiac Critical Care Unit for several months under constant care until a suitable heart became available. On December 25, 2022, he received his new heart.
Now on Medicare, we are required to continue fundraising, as both the uncovered medical expenses as well as additional non-medical transplant-related expenses are quite substantial. We need funds for items such as:
*transportation (gas for frequent 90 minute round trips to Emory and other health care facilities plus parking costs)
*accessories and equipment he needs to adapt to his new life as a transplant patient - for example, SPF 50 protective clothing as transplant patients are very prone to skin cancer
*insurance deductible and out-of-pocket max for first quarter 2023 on his former insurance PLUS increased premium and medication costs that come with Medicare coverage as of April 1st
*and much more
Any amount you can contribute, no matter how modest, will be incredibly helpful to us as we navigate this challenging journey.
Thank you!
