A New Hip, A New Hope: Help Patrice Walk Again
Donation protected
My sister Patrice has spent her life giving to others, sharing her passion for dance and gymnastics, and bringing joy to countless children by helping their dreams take flight. She’s a radiant light in this world, always putting others before herself.
However, the past year has been incredibly challenging. Since beginning her sobriety journey, Patrice has been dealing with Avascular Necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, which is the death of bone tissue caused by a disruption of blood flow within a bone. Following a recent fall, she urgently needs a hip replacement, as her hip is now completely broken. This surgery is critical for her to regain her mobility and independence.
Over the past six months, Patrice has been working tirelessly on her recovery from opioid addiction. She spent three months at Turning Point in Tampa, Florida, where she touched the hearts of everyone she met with her infectious spirit. Throughout her journey, Patrice has shown incredible strength and responsibility. When she was hospitalized recently, she advocated for herself, ensuring her medical team understood her commitment to sobriety by requesting they limit the use of opioids as much as possible. Despite the pain and difficulty, Patrice remains steadfast, determined to continue her sobriety while navigating the challenges posed by her injury.
While my brother, who has walked his own path to recovery, has been an incredible support to Patrice, she still faces an uphill battle. After her surgery, she’ll need extensive rehabilitation to regain her independence. Our home, which is over 120 years old, is not equipped to handle her post-surgery needs. To ensure she can recover safely and comfortably, we need to make some significant modifications, including:
- A walk-in shower and larger, mobility-friendly toilet with guardrails
- An assisted Transfer/dignity Lift Wheelchair, which will help her move between the bed, wheelchair, and bathroom safely without needing to put weight on her hip during her recovery
- A mobility scooter to help her maintain independence
- All the above will support her physical therapy, water aerobic therapy, and transportation to in-person AA/NA meetings
Additionally, our mother is a full-time teacher and, despite her best efforts, cannot provide the round-the-clock care that Patrice will need initially. Thankfully insurance will pay for in-house care. Patrice’s recovery will require 24-hour assistance until she becomes more mobile and can manage daily tasks independently.
We are also facing astronomical medical bills and need all the help we can get to make our home suitable for her long-term recovery. Following her surgery and rehabilitation, Patrice plans to continue her sobriety journey by returning to detox and rehab, and she is determined to come back stronger than ever.
Patrice has given so much to the world, and now it’s time for us to give back to her. Every little bit counts—whether it’s a donation or simply sharing this page. Let’s help Patrice get back on her feet and continue to spread her light.
Thank you so much for your kindness and support.
