A New Home and Future for Camp Wakanda!

All children have superpowers! But Black and Brown children growing up in neglected areas of New York City don't always grow up understanding that they have the power to change our world in positive and innovative ways.
Camp Wakanda is a place where these children discover their superpowers and begin to develop their talents as future scientists, engineers, creators, and world changers! Toxicologist Tamykah Anthony has developed a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math/Music) curriculum especially for our children of color. At Camp Wakanda, kids start to understand that they have the power to shape their environment, and to begin building a vision for our neighborhoods. Most of our local campers are residents of public housing, including the Astoria Houses, Ravenswood Houses, and Queensbridge Houses, but some travel from Brooklyn; at Camp Wakanda, our campers are affirmed in their brilliance and creativity and get to experience everything from martial arts to music engineering workshops to science labs where they make their own natural personal care products!
But Camp Wakanda is not only a home for kids---its a staple for our community. When school is out, our space is used by the local community for personal gatherings like baby showers, retirement parties, and birthday celebrations, and for valuable community-building events like our weekly Men's Circle and our new Stay Woke Town Hall. Tamykah has created a space where the beauty of our families and our community is celebrated, and where we become organized!
Unfortunately, just as our Camp and year-round School is beginning to take root, we desperately need to find a new, larger home. We have found a new space only a half block away that will give us all the room we need to welcome many new campers and students in 2020, where we can build all the special facilities we need to make Camp Wakanda a truly life-changing experience for our kids.
We are asking our community to help us raise the capital to claim this new space and become an even greater force for good in the community---and especially for our children. Reaching our goal will allow us to lease the new space and perform some minor renovations to make the School and Camp ready to go--including building "Shuri's Lab", a special room for science experimentation and exploration! Finally, if we reach our goal, we will be able to offer free 3-week scholarships to a minimum of 5 kids next summer to attend Camp Wakanda----kids from the neediest families who otherwise would not be able to attend.
There is power in numbers---our goal may seem high, but we are many! Won't you help make a small contribution to help us build a new home for Camp Wakanda?
