A prettier, greener Harrison Street
Donation protected
We’re a growing group of 50+ neighbors who want to make our street more beautiful.
Harrison Street can be better! When we come and go from home or work, we can see beautiful greenery and attractive planter boxes.
This approach to neighborhood beautification was suggested to us by District Supervisor Hillary Ronen's office. We proposed several different methods and her office said this was the "best" solution because "they are too heavy to move and they compliment the streetscape."
But the city won't do it for us, so we are taking the lead and doing it ourselves, and we need financial support. Each planter costs $675 and we are aiming to fund 30 of them, plus extra for maintenance costs.
Harrison Street Planters Facts
- The planters will be installed by a local landscaping company that has done dozens of installations in San Francisco
- They will coordinate the delivery of the metal planters, plus the 1000s of pounds of gravel/rock/and soil required to fill them
- Each planter will weigh approximately 1400 lbs, they are very hard to move.
Frequently asked questions
What's your fundraising deadline?
We need all the funds together by May 25th. Even if you can only donate a little, please donate early.
What will the planters look like?
They’ll be just like the metal planters in the photos here: https://imgur.com/a/KxyTPtw
How much will they cost?
Each planter comes fully installed at $675 each.
We are aiming for 30 of them total.
Is this allowed?
We have the explicit support of the city via the District 9 Supervisor's office. The planters are also in compliance with city code and do not require permitting.
How will the plants stay alive?
The company installing the planters will water them for 2 months after installation, to make sure the plants build a tough root system. After that, we’ll coordinate watering them once a month. That’s all that’s needed because we will use only drought-tolerant plants which are either native to Northern California, or proven to be hardy in our climate. Examples are succulents or grasses.
What about maintenance?
Our group is committed to cleaning and maintaining these planters for years.
