A promise to my dad…
I’m running the Ibiza marathon to raise money for a brilliant organisation called Breakfree Support.
Breakfree support want to squash the stigma around addiction and mental health. Providing tools and strategies and coping mechanisms to help people break free from their addictions.
Started in Liverpool by 3 lads and 3 phones, they use a combination of 121 meetings, gym sessions, recovery walks and mindfulness
Importantly, they support family members so that they can get an understanding of why they ended up where they are.
As a child of a parent who suffered with an addiction illness. I’ve always questioned why I wasn’t enough for my dad just to stop drinking. But beating addiction isn’t as simple as waking up one day and deciding you’ll never drink again.
My dad wanted nothing more than to be able to switch that button and never pick up a drink again.
Dad lost his battle with addiction 2 years ago and my promise to him was that I’d try and do as much good as possible in his name. To educate people about addiction and the stigmas attached to the illness.
I truly believe that if my dad had access to the break-free program. I might still have a dad, My nan might still have her son.
So this is why I’ve decided to run my first ever marathon in Ibiza to raise as much money as possible so the lads at Break Free can take on more dads, mums, sons, daughters on to the program, provide more facilities and support more families.
Times are difficult for all so I really appreciate any donations no matter how small and if you’ve just taken the time to read this, Thank You. Please if anything use my Dad’s story to empower your recovery if you’re struggling, be kind and have compassion.
