A Safe Home for Women Escaping Violence

Donation protected
I lived in and survived a violent relationship for 10 years, I was able to escape with my 3 children and a purpose to provide them and myself with a healthier life. There were many bumps in the road, some days I did not know when and where the next meal was coming from. I was given the opportunity to find a safe haven at a shelter in New Hampshire, a humble roof over my head, and a community of people that would support me to pull my self up by the boot straps. After abuse, I was able to obtain my degree, start my career as an educator, and eventually buy and create a stable home for my children and I.  I accessed and benefited from homeless shelters, career development services, grants for higher education,  mental health services, and a community that I could rely on when I needed support just to name a few.

Those types of supports are vital to women fleeing from domestic violence.  Our mission at The Nia House is to help women and femme survivors of intimate partner violence transition from harmful relationships into a life of physical, emotional, and economic safety and well-being. We work with our residents to heal as whole persons, regain their confidence, and discover their professional and personal callings.

Our vision is to create an ecosystem of survivors who can coach and confide in each other and empower future generations of women and femmes.

We derived the name for Nia House from the fifth principle of Kwanzaa; in this context “Nia” means purpose. Nia House will be a safe, welcoming space for women and femmes who are seeking their way back to a healthy and balanced lifestyle through discovering, nurturing, and sharing their professional calling—or, their purpose—with the NC community.

We are seeking start-up costs to bring The Nia House to fruition. These funds would allow us to locate a physical property and source household materials to begin offering our much-needed services to the community in rural Johnston County NC.
