A small donation for a Big Dream
A donation gave me the opportunity to be a scientist
As a kid, I grew up herding goats in rural Ethiopia. The opportunity to attend school wasn’t an option. There were no schools in the area and no one I knew attended school. Luckily in 1974, generous donors opened the first elementary school for the region in the village of Ashuda, an hour walk away from where I lived. I am one of the first 70 students that enrolled in the new school. The school opened minds to think differently, to Dream Big and changed my life and hundreds of others. My Big Dream led me to achieve a PhD in Biochemistry. Currently, I am a Senior Scientist at a reputable biotechnology company, Genentech developing lifesaving medicines.
This truly demonstrates the power of a small donation and its lifelong impact on an individual but more importantly on society at large.
Unfortunately, the same school I attended is overcrowded; there are as many as 80 kids in a class, no adequate textbooks, chairs or other school facilities.
I have a personal mission to give back and create the opportunity for others to Dream Big! I am raising funds to build additional classrooms and update existing ones for Ashuda and other schools in the region.
I have dedicated local community leaders and other collaborators who will be organizing the community in the rebuilding effort.
Running for Education
To reach the fundraising target, my friends and I will be running the Boston Marathon on April 15. Each of us will be training for 40-60 miles per week to prepare us for the grueling Boston marathon and be able to cross the finishing line with Great Spirit. Let us do the training and you help us reach our fundraising target and be that person who gives the opportunity for a kid to Dream Big!
A $50 can buy a desk that seats three students. Over 20 years, this desk will serve 60 students who will become scientists, poets, lawyers, engineers, doctors….
In addition, I will match your donation dollar for dollar up to $2,000 and my company Genentech will match it with the same amount.
Yes, your donation of $100 will triple to $300!
