Since 1959, we have worked tirelessly to empower young Africans and their families, and have succeeded in helping many of them escape poverty. However, climate change is wreaking devastation in Zambia and we are facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Zambia is experiencing power cuts of up to 20 hours a day and a lack of clean water in rural areas. The most severe drought in over forty years has destroyed almost half of the maize crop, affecting over two million people who are already food insecure.
Chilobwe is a rural community in northern Zambia. It is home to 117 families (approximately one thousand people, including 250 children). Despite the challenges they face, they retain a sense of joy and hope for a better future. They are determined to break this cycle and take advantage of the opportunities that allow them to prosper. The situation has worsened, the average family income in the community is US$ 0.79 per day, which places them within the range of the population in extreme poverty, 99% do not have electricity, their water sources are the river and some wells that are located an average distance of 2.7 km from their homes.
Now, together with the community, we are building a community space to continue training in sustainable agriculture, building a community house and installing organic gardens, but we don't have water. The nearest possibility to have water is to build a borehole, with solar energy. Thank God the sun is always shining in Zambia. These measures will prepare the community for the radical impacts of climate change.
We cannot meet these challenges alone. With the value you bring, we will build a solar-powered borehole, which will be located on the communal land for the use of the entire population!
With your support we will make a difference !
