Hey Y’all!
I hope this message finds you in great spirits. I'm writing to share some exciting news and humbly ask for your support. My name is Alex (AJ) White-Johnson, and I'm currently a dual-degree master's student in sports management at Umass Amherst, (#1 school in the US for Sports Management). Despite facing various trials and tribulations, I'm proud to say that I've achieved a 3.4 GPA as I near the end of my first year.
Now, I find myself at a pivotal moment that requires me to take another leap of faith, just as you may have done many times yourself. I have an incredible opportunity on the horizon, and I'm hoping you can help me turn this blessing into a reality. I've been offered the chance to participate in the NBA Summer League—an opportunity that truly humbles aspiring sports professionals like myself who dream of becoming a general manager. But let's be honest—it's no walk in the park to becoming a GM or even getting all access to these types of events. These opportunities are extremely rare, fiercely competitive, and securing access involves navigating a web of limited passes and intricate politics for spectators.
Regardless, I've poured my heart and soul into this journey. Through my first year of my MBA and my summer internship with the Basketball Hall of Fame, I've forged valuable connections and earned the chance to attend the summer league from July 7th to July 12th. It's an incredible blessing, and I'm immensely grateful for the opportunity to grow my curiosity and inject my professional brand into the basketball world.
However, I face a significant financial hurdle. As a grad student, funding this trip to Las Vegas on my own has proven quite challenging, especially with short notice to book accommodations. That's why I'm reaching out to you, my community, my support system, for help. I'm seeking a total commitment of $1,500 to cover the costs associated with this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Moreover, I want you to understand the profound impact your contribution would have. It's not solely about financial assistance, although that would provide incredible relief. It's about the belief you place in me, my unwavering passion, and the potential impact I can make in the sports industry, particularly as a member of the black community. I've noticed how the media often sells the youth the notion that "you have to play basketball to be in the NBA." Well, maybe that's the problem. There weren’t enough people that looked like me that I could aspire to; let alone enough people that believed you could be in the NBA without dribbling a basketball. But I digress.. It’s never too late to chase your dreams.
Your support, regardless of the amount, would truly make a profound difference. It would not only help me secure my spot at the NBA Summer League, but will create a foundation for a young professional, that will enable him to “give others a push, just when they need it”
