A Tribute to Our Dad: Remembering Benjamin

Our father, Benjamin Oduro, suddenly passed away on Monday, April 6th, 2020 after succumbing to an underlying heart condition and respiratory infections.
His vibrantly rich journey on Earth was peppered with both joy and sorrow. Through it all he managed to smile brightly to find humor and strength in the darkest moments, such as when he lost his late wife, Victoria, to Colorectal Cancer in 2008. He battled various illnesses most of his life, including years spent on the transplant list while struggling with Kidney Disease. In October 2019, our father received a long-awaited call and underwent a successful multi-organ transplant. A long recovery and rehabilitation period ensued where he regained movement and control of his body. This healing process took place in several inpatient facilities until he was able to return home in December 2019 for what would be his final Christmas with us.
During one of his routine appointments in March 2020, he complained about shortness of breath; he was then admitted back into the hospital after testing positive for pneumonia. Although, our father received treatment his condition worsened and the physicians discovered an underlying heart condition that required immediate surgery. We were cautiously hopeful his health would improve enough to have the procedure. Instead, he continued to deteriorate and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). At this point the heart condition became inoperable and the main focus shifted to trying to keep him alive. Eventually, our father's heart stopped beating and the doctors were unable to revive him.
As his beloved children--two sons and one daughter--we are devastated by his loss, but even in our grief we are reminded of his legacy and we’d like to do everything in our power to honor his memory. To that end, the donations we’ re asking for will be used to peacefully lay him to rest and settle his financial affairs. Please, only give what you can. Every penny that goes towards these efforts will provide major support to a family that is mourning the loss of a man who so generously touched the hearts of everyone he encountered throughout his life. Sharing this page with your friends and family is an equally incredible contribution to our cause.
We’re living in a very peculiar time in history. It’s unfortunate that he passed so early and unexpectedly in our lives and even more unfortunate that this occurred while the world is in such a state of disarray. As we grieve the loss of a loved one, let us not lose hope in ourselves. Let's keep our heads held high, and move forward towards better times. We’ll all get through this, together.
