A Way For Wells

Hi, my name is Wells Kevin Zaunbrecher and I am 10 months old. Despite my battles, I continue to show my love and personality through my smiles and giggles. My mommy, daddy, and big sister say I am the toughest person they know. Keep reading and I’ll explain to you why they think that!

In a perfectly developed heart, you have a right chamber that pumps blood to the lungs and a left chamber that pumps blood to the body. I was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Essentially, this means that my left chamber did not develop. I have to undergo a series of surgeries that can only ‘bandaid’ the defect. With that comes many procedures and interventions between and after these three main surgeries. I had my first surgery at 4 days old and my second surgery this past December, at 6 months old. Along with congenital defects can come other disorders. I will be flying to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to get Lymphatic testing done, in the near future, with the specialist there, to see how well or not well my Lymphatic system will handle the final surgery. If they feel as if I am not eligible for the final surgery, that will make me a candidate for a heart transplant when the time comes. With the constant trips, surgeries, visits, and lengthy hospital stays, unfortunately this has been an emotional and financial strain on my family.
