Who We Are - Our Story
Trans Sisters United is a Melbourne based community group that creates projects that benefit the transgender community through advocacy, awareness and community collaboration.
Trans Sisters United’s humble beginnings started with a group of friends who were inspired by a screening at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. The short documentary featured the life of the “Sistergirls” of the Tiwi Islands, a small remote community north of Darwin, Australia. The Tiwi Island has one of the largest populations of Sistergirls and Brotherboys in Australia and they fought hard to gain accepted by society.
This experience made us realize that we could use our privileges to support our community and use our platform to elevate the voices of others within the transgender community. From these early conversations, Trans Sisters United was established by Co-founders Sasja Sydek & Rebeckah Loveday.
As a newly established not for profit, we are currently self-funded and aim to receive donations and sponsorship from organisations to assist us with our projects. We want to grow our business to become a nationally recognized organisation and brand where we can utilize our lived experience as transgender women to support others within our community, promote awareness and create inclusive events across the country and abroad.
Our Vision
Trans Sisters United has a vision to bring together the transgender community while also collaborating with other organisations and businesses to promote a greater understanding and awareness for the transgender community to the broader population through advocacy, awareness and community collaboration.
Our Upcoming Project Needs Your Help!
We will be travelling to Tiwi Islands on the 4th February 2020 and the project we have planned is to run a yarning circle and portrait opportunity specifically for the Sistergirls. We will also be spending several days with the Sistergirls prior to the event to learn and connect with them through culture and shared experiences.
The key purpose of this project is to promote awareness for the Sistergirls of the Tiwi Islands, documenting their unique and beautiful community while creating a cross-cultural sisterhood through shared experience and connection.
It has been challenging self-funding this project and we have spoken with a few organisations regarding sponsorship but unfortunately time is not in our favor. We did however, received 42 gift bags of beauty products generously sponsored by an anonymous donor which will be distributed at the event.
We have exhausted most of our personal savings from our initial trip to the Tiwi Islands last year where we met with the Sistergirls and ensured that we are being culturally sensitive throughout our journey and the creation of this project.
Your support will help us tremendously to cover a few of our larger expenditure which will include:
1) Accommodation in Darwin & the Tiwi Islands
2) Ferry tickets from Darwin to Tiwi Islands (returns )
3) The event setup cost that we have planned for the Sistergirls over the weekend
e.g. foods and beverages for the attendees of the event
4) Any additional cost will go to The Sistersgirls of Tiwi Islands
Thank you in advance for your kind contribution and this will truly assist to benefit Trans Sisters United and the Sistergirls of the Tiwi Islands.
We will be providing updates and photographs of the trip so please watch this space.
