Fundraiser for a Replacement Custom-Made Electronic Wheelchair for Prudence Mabhena
The challenge that Prudence is facing is that her wheelchair which was custom-made for her in 2010 for USD$37,000.00 in the United States after her successful hip and spine surgeries, is no longer working and is now irreparable locally. As per quotation received from mrwheelchair.co.za, a wheelchair specialist company in Durban, South Africa on July 3rd 2019, a new wheelchair custom-made to suit Prudence's use will cost R150,000.00 which is equivalent to USD$10,675.45 or £8,489.55.
Born with Arthrogryposis, a debilitating condition which severely twists, stiffens and stunts arms and legs, Prudence has overcome the odds and has proved that disability is not inability.
Prudence Mabhena is a renowned Zimbabwean Afro-fusion musician who began singing at a very young age. She has performed in many countries around the world and has starred in a musical documentary about her life which won an Academy Award in 2010. Prudence is also a 2018 Awardee of the prestigious American Henry Viscardi Award for Influential People with Disabilities.
Music By Prudence
Through her music, Prudence is an advocate for women and children’s rights and disability rights. She has worked with many organisations including UNICEF, MSF and Plan International as a Goodwill Ambassador. She is also a motivational speaker who has especially assisted parents of disabled children by persuading them to send their children to school in order for their children to overcome their disabilities and live a full, productive and happy life.
Without her wheelchair, Prudence no longer has the freedom to move around doing the work which she loves such as motivating people and teaching music part-time at King George Memorial School for the Disabled.
Ninety percent of the work that Prudence does is voluntary, therefore she cannot afford to travel to South Africa to have the wheelchair repaired, or to the United States to have it repaired or replaced.
Prudence is therefore kindly requesting for assistance in the form of a replacement electronic wheelchair which will give her independence to travel and work, or with a donation that will go towards the purchase of the wheelchair.
Donations can be made on this platform, or should you wish to assist in any other way, please contact Prudence directly on +263772916719 / +263773144050,
or via her sister Pamela Ntini on +263772684746
or via her Manager Precious Mpofu on +27 817271786 / +263773546385.
