In September 2014, my wife, Kim, was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer that had spread extensively throughout her liver. The tumor was removed and 4 weeks after the surgery, she began chemotherapy treatments. She endured 17 rounds of debilitating chemotherapy treatments with 3 hospitalizations, before she lost her fight on June 9th 2015. She was 48 years old when she passed leaving behind her husband of 12 ½ years and their 2 children of 11 and 7 years of age.

Kim’s family was her life. She was completely devoted to us. Throughout her illness, she constantly worried about us and tried, to the best of her ability, to care for us and make life as normal as possible.  She always had a smile on her face and would tell everyone that asked “I’m doing okay”, no matter how bad or weak that she felt. Every time she would see someone else that was sick, she would always check on them and be genuinely concerned about how they were doing. Many people commented to me about how amazed they were with Kim showing so much strength and determination to be as much as a part of her children’s life as she could, despite clearly being very weak and sick. Many people were inspired by her spirit throughout her illness, always smiling and caring for others.

On Easter Sunday, only a couple of months before the Lord brought her home, she got very sick and I had to take her to the emergency room in Jackson. She received treatment in the E.R. for 4 hours, before finally getting a room. During that time the doctors and nurses took great care of her and help her as much as they could. When the room was ready and they began to take her out of the E.R., the nurse that spent the most time with her began to cry. She told us that Kim was the sweetest patient she had ever treated and it broke her heart that she was so sick. This was a person that had never met Kim before and only spent 4 hours with her. But that’s the effect that Kim had on just about everyone that ever had the privilege of getting to know her.

The loss of our precious Kim has been the most devastating thing that we could have ever imagined happening to our family. She was the best wife and mother for which anyone could ever ask. Our family will forever have a hole in our hearts for her. But, the legacy that she has left behind will make the world a better place, for those of us that love her so much.

Part of that legacy is already manifesting itself through her children. Ryan and Taylor aren’t old enough to really understand cancer. They just know that it has taken their mother and they don’t want that to happen to anyone else. They have been looking for ways to raise money to donate to a cancer charity. Taylor, for example, has been going around church asking for donations. She and a friend hers sold cookies and brownies to raise money. She has also insisted on donating all her money ($97.00) that she has saved from birthdays and money she’s earned through chores. Here’s a 7 year old that wants to donate all of her money to help others. What a wonderful gift that Kim has given to us, through Taylor and Ryan.

We are asking that you join us in raising money to be donated to the Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation. Susan Cohan’s story is very similar to Kim’s. It is a worthy charity that helps thousands of victims of colon cancer. We ask that you help us reach our goal so that we can help make a difference is someone else life and hopefully help prevent some other family from losing their precious loved one.
