Myron Kelley started his career with the New Jersey Department of Corrections at Northern State Prison in February 1992. While there, he was a trusted, reliable, and dedicated officer. Anyone who knew Myron knew that he had an intense love for dogs. Myron Kelly took his love for dogs and talents to the New Jersey Department of Corrections - Special Operations Group - Canine Unit in 2004. Myron went to patrol school and became a certified canine handler in 2005. While Myron worked for the canine unit, he was a handler of multiple patrol and contraband canines. Myron was also a handler of a bloodhound name Tupac. Myron's work with Tupac was legendary, as he was responsible for finding several critical missing persons.
Myron was well known within the department and canine community throughout the state for his kind disposition, easy-going personality, hard work, and dedication to his canine partners and training. In 2009, Myron rose to an elite status and became a trainer for the Department's Canine Unit. Myron worked with many law enforcement agencies throughout the state and always represented the New Jersey Department of Corrections to the highest level. Myron also introduced a very unique, and effective, patrol dog named Nikolai. Nikkolai was the talk of the state; from colleagues, school children, even the inmates in prison, because of his unique breed. Nikkolai was a Black Russian Terrier. Nikkolai fit Myron's personality perfectly because he too was a large, easygoing, hard-working canine partner.
Myron eventually became the lead trainer for the entire New Jersey Department of Corrections Canine Unit and introduced a very different approach to training that process to be extremely effective. He held that title until his retirement date in 2016.
Myron not only trained a multitude of young canine handlers within the Department, but he also trained a multiple of canine handlers throughout the entire state. Myron is well known to this day for his intense love for dogs. Myron also had a very unique taste for very exotic dogs; Cane Corso, Presa Canario, Donovan Pinscher, Tibetan Mastiff, Kangol; just to name a few. These dogs and their uniqueness truly represented the type of personality and attributes that Myron has.
Anyone who has ever met Myron could not help but to want to be his friend. Unfortunately, Myron recently was stricken with some significant health issues. However, in true Myron fashion, he is not going to allow that to stop him. Myron has been in great spirits and is looking forward to tackling this new chapter in his life.
We are looking for all of those that Myron has touched over the years, to come together now and provide a little bit of support and show the love and appreciation that they have always had for Myron during this very challenging time in his life. We are asking that everyone think about Myron and how he has impacted you in some shape, way, or form. If you know Myron like we do, you know nothing will stop him from optimizing everything in life that is before him, while continuing to show his immense love for all animals, particularly the love for all of his dogs.
Please join us at this time and show Myron how much he means to you and what his impact has been on your career or your life.
