Robert's recovery
Donation protected
My husband Robert underwent an out patient urethroplasty procedure on September 4th,2015. The procedure was designed to resolve a recurring series of urinary strictures that stemed from radiation therapy he received after a cancerous mass was removed. His cancer removal was about 5 years ago. Thankfully he has been cancer free since then. Unfortunately due to the radiation treatments recieved 5 years ago he has dealt with situation that ultimately led to the surgery in September.
The urethroplasty was designed to remove the strictures and replace it with a graft from his cheek. His recovery was very slow and had many complications which eventually lead up to a massive nasty infection in his urine, incision site and his blood that landed him in the ER on 10/17/15. The bacterial infection is called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In addition, he was given a failed surgery diagnosis from the September surgery.
During the last six days we spent in the hospital he has been on IV antibiotics and will continue on a 14 day regiment at home. He underwent two additional procedures while in the hospital.
Now that we are home he will have to have a wound care nurse come to the house daily for several weeks.
We will monitor all of that and unfortunately a repeat surgery is his best option. The surgeon is located in Dallas--a four hour drive from our home.
We are overwhelmed and extremely fearful of any infections. The medical bills will only continue to grow over the next several months including prescriptions, self care materials, transportation etc.
I have taken a number of days off work and completely exhausted all my sick and vacation time.
As some of you know I too suffer from a chronic mental illness which requires medication and doctors appointments.
My biggest concern besides all the financial aspects and of course my husband's health and quality of life is ensuring our home remains as germ free as possible. A maid service would be ideal. We have received overwhelming emotional support during this hard time. I have taken a loan out to pay for the medical bills from his surgery in September and his parents have been generous to help as well.
It will be a long road ahead. If you are able to donate please do. If you can't that is more than OK too. Sending us strength, courage, positive healthy thoughts and prayers are priceless.
Thank you.
