Help Me Meet My Birth Mother

In August of 2000, I was adopted into a loving family in Albany, NY from South Korea. Being raised in a predominantly white community led to its own unique challenges, and I grew up not knowing much about my Korean background or culture. College opened my eyes to my asian roots, and led me to become more curious about where I came from. With the support of my parents, I decided to reach out to the agency that handled my adoption with the hopes of learning more about where I came from and who my birth parents were. Typically, the process of finding your birth parents leads to little to no results. Coming into this journey, I was fully aware that I would probably not get any responses about my inquiries other than some minor details about who my birth parents were.

Recently, I woke up to the best news I could’ve dreamed of. The adoption agency was able to contact my birth mother in South Korea, and she expressed her desire to meet me. Receiving this news put me into shock- the countless years of wondering who she was, what she looks like, what she sounds like, etc. were finally going to be answered. To finally have the opportunity to meet my birth mother continues to feel surreal, and I am so thankful to my family and the adoption agency who helped me in getting here, as well as my friends who have been so supportive of my journey in this.

This amazing opportunity has presented itself to me in a time of financial instability. As a recent graduate, I have been painstakingly looking for a full time job (as most people know, the job market is not in its best condition right now). While I continue to work my part-time job and do some freelancing work for extra income, I would greatly appreciate any sort of financial aid to help me meet my birth mother. This is a once in a lifetime chance to meet the woman who brought me into this world, explore where I came from, and reconnect with my roots.
