I'm raising money for my close friend Sandy, who is in need of financial assistance for her double lung transplant. She is my friend of 20 years and I want to do what I can to help her situation. You may know Sandy from her 10 years as a waitress at The BBQ in Yalesville, or her 6 years at Dad's Restaurant. She is a lifelong resident of Wallingford, and a 1978 Sheehan graduate. “My name is Sandy Benard Thibodeau. About a year and a half ago, I began my journey towards an inevitable double lung transplant. My family and I have dipped into our savings many times for medical expenses, including testing, scans, treatments, bloodwork, overnights in the hospital, and travel. We have reached the unfortunate point where all of our savings have run out and there is nothing left. None of my treatments are conducted in Connecticut, so I have to go to the Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston anywhere from once every few months, to multiple times a month. We have to pay for gas, parking, tolls, family hotel stays, meals, etc. Medical insurance doesn’t cover any of these expenses. I have been in a pulmonary rehab program at Gaylord, but I have exceeded the amount of visits covered by my insurance, and I need to be in this program to be considered for a lung transplant. So I still go for my treatments, but have to pay out of pocket, which is in the hundreds of dollars each treatment. My next step is February 3rd. I will be going to Boston to have an EKG, bloodwork, echocardiogram, catheter, and a function test. These tests will determine if I even qualify for a transplant. I will be staying in the hospital for 24 hours afterward. I need funds for lungs.”
