Toby's Eye Surgery
Donation protected
I adopted Toby a few weeks ago at a local adoption event. It was love at first sight - he is the calmest, most affectionate and well adjusted animal I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He bonded with my other 2 cats immediately and we feel like he's been here forever.
The reason he was at this event, and the reason the adoption fee was only ten dollars, is because he is blind in one eye. He has spent the last 6 months being transferred from shelter to shelter up the west coast and no one had been able to place him in a home. I took him to our family vet 2 days later and she referred me to a specialist. The specialist was able to determine that Toby likely had a very severe and untreated outbreak of herpes as a kitten, resulting in a ruptured eye. The conjunctiva has grown right on to his retina, completely scarred/blocked both his tear ducts in that eye, and has caused his inner eyelid to be stuck. He is not able to open the eye all the way and requires drops every 6 hours (which he hates). He is extremely uncomfortable and will be at risk of infection for the rest of his life if the eye stays in.
He is scheduled to have his eye removed on 7/21/17 and I am so anxious to get him comfortable and pain free after all that he's been through. He is approximately 2 years old and is in perfect health otherwise.
The total cost of sedation, medication, hospital care and post op visit comes to $1100USD. I would so very much appreciate any assistance that anyone could give Toby - every little bit helps! I will provide regular updates and photos after the surgery. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
