Aaliyah Essential Prescription Medicine

Donation protected
The family  moved to Canada in 2016, and after finally settling in Surrey, BC Canada in 2018, Aaliyah was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia disease. People with this hereditary disorder have atypical hemoglobin molecules. That abnormal hemoglobin causes the usually round red blood cells to distort into a sickle, or crescent, shape which can get stuck in blood vessels. Patients can suffer painful episodes, anemia and organ damage.

In March 2020, Aaliyah had suffered two strokes, seizures, and a brain injury.  She had internal bleeding and lost her entire blood. A code was called and was rushed to OR, had two surgeries, her entire spleen was removed and spent weeks in Intensive Care unit at BC Children Hospital. Aaliyah is under close monitoring by the Hematology and Neurology team of BC Children Hospital, and she is undergoing a Brain Injury Program to recover from a Brain injury she sustained while in Hospital. She is also undergoing both Speech therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Neuropsychology evaluation.

She is a recipient of Red Blood Cell Exchange, a Program that remove her entire Red Blood Cell and receiving NEW and fresh one, once a month since January 2019. This improve her hemoglobin count, lower platelets to normal and reduce potential painful crisis in her bones.  Aaliyah donors lives in Ontario, and they have been donating every month. The family do not know the donors, but they are grateful to them, CBS and BC Children Medical team.

With Aaliyah’s family not predicting this life altering diagnosis, Aaliyah Critical Illness Benefit coverage was DECLINED by our Group Plan Insurance Provider. This Benefit would have helped the family to recover from many expenses and save for any uncertainty ahead of them.

Some prescription medicine, that is essential to prolong her life until Neurologist decide it is safe to discontinue, was discontinued by our Insurance after being covered for period of 4 months. It would cost a family $241 per one month dose for one anti-seizure prescription. Decision to decline coverage of “life essential Prescription “has shocked the family, and they are not sure if the insurance company will make another move to refuse to covers others.

Abdi wanted to keep their personal life private but have opted to take the advice of Abdi’s Plant Manager, Denis Kizin: “this is nothing to be ashamed about; if you need help, you need help”. Therefore, a go-fund-me has been set up to raise funds to support Aaliyah with the expenses they must endure in order to prolong Aaliyah’s life.

A Goal of CAD 6,000 has been set up, this will fund Aaliyah’s Prescription for 1 year in case Insurance discontinue coverage. Aaliyah is taking total of 6 Prescription Medicine for Now, every day.
