Abby's Story
Abby Shoenfelt (30) is the wife of Oscar and mom to an adorable 14-month-old baby boy named Solomon. As most of y'all know, Abby was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma on February 2nd.  It has been an inflammatory reminder that we are certainly not in control and our plans simply are provisional at best.  It has been a hectic, life-altering, abysmal, tough, and hard to swallow few weeks since her diagnosis.

The Diagnosis
Abby hadn’t been feeling well for about three months which she had attributed to the fact that Solomon was bringing every cold in South West Louisiana home with him from daycare.  Unfortunately, a lump above her clavicle popped up in January and for 3 weeks never changed or went away.  Even though she was actually feeling a bit better, she decided to have it checked out at the end of January at the hospital in Lake Charles, LA, where she works as a resident physician.  Her blood work was fine, but a scan of her chest revealed one very large worrisome lymph node and a mass in her chest.  Due to this abnormal finding, a biopsy was done that same day and within 48 hours she was diagnosed with Stage 2b Hodgkin's Lymphoma (quite a whirlwind).

Moving Forward
Since her Diagnosis it has not been all gloom and peril.   Fortunately, Abby, Oscar and Solomon belong to an amazing local church that has been extremely comforting and supportive.  They' ve been blown away by the letters, calls, emails, texts and kind words of encouragement and prayer from their network of family, friends, and former church families.  Although neither Abby nor Oscar grew up in Lake Charles and moving so frequently for their work has not been ideal or easy, they feel God has blessed them with a great support network all over South Louisiana.  They can feel the Holy Spirit working in their home as they embark on this new journey.

There have been so many acts of kindness and gifts of encouragement thusfar.  They've had journals, meals, books, donations, drinks, medicines, vitamin supplements, daycare needs, and prayer letters pour in.  It has been a humbling experience.  Oscar says, "Walking with your wife while she struggles through something so devastating as a cancer diagnosis and now chemo has been traumatic especially as we do not have many resources at this stage in our life to fight this battle alone.  Thankfully the body of Christ is strong and his provisions have been numerous and bountiful through so many of ya’ll."

The Need for Support (Financial and Emotional) During Chemotherapy
Since starting Chemo on Feb 23rd, Abby has already lost some weight and a lot of energy.  This will definitely not be an easy battle. Abby has felt nauseated and weak as she begins treatment. Her battle is compounded by the fact that she must continue working (!!!) to keep her existing health insurance, which still has a $10,000 deductible for any medical related expenses.

Abby and Oscar would greatly appreciate any financial support you are able to offer them to help offset the staggering medical expenses that this process will incurr. Abby and Oscar are both resident physicians who work long hours with baby Solomon at home and Abby's chemo will continue for the next 6 months at a minimum.

Abby and Oscar also ask for your prayers during this tumultuous time. Specifically, they ask that you pray for the strength to battle the Lymphoma, for God to strengthen their marraige, to have the energy to raise Solomon, and for the wisdom to navigate the tricky financial landscape of their near future.

Thank you for the love and support - they appreciate it more than you'll ever know.

2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
