Dear friends and colleagues,
We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Abdul Baset, a field officer in one of our development programmes who succumbed to his wounds following a barrel bomb strike in Aleppo City last week.
Abdul had always lived in Aleppo. He was a business school graduate and ran his own business before the war. He had worked for us since August 2015. Out of loyalty to his home and his convictions he chose to remain as the siege was imposed. He was 35 years old. He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son in the city as well as wider family elsewhere in Syria and in Turkey. His brother is currently with his immediate family.
We are all too familiar with the terrible consequences of the ongoing conflict in Syria, and the human tragedy it inflicts, and that is why we all do what we do on our programmes. We know that our field officers have to work, in fact choose to work, in those desperate circumstances. But that will never lessen sense of loss when it is one of our own who becomes the latest casualty of the war.
Our support to Syrian communities would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of people like Abdul to our shared values and aims.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Abdul’s family and friends and to his many colleagues within our teams. Any contribution, large or small, that you can make to add to his insurance and support his family through these difficult times will be hugely appreciated.
