Abigail Raymond is three years old and was born with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) which is one of the most complex cardiac defects seen in newborns.
On July 8th, 2011 Abigail had her first surgery, the Glenn Procedure and was in the hospital for eight days. On August 8th, 2014 she had her second open heart surgery, the Fontan procedure (open/heart). I guess I could say that we were all really hopeful that her surgery would go as good as the last and have a short hospital stay, but not the case! We spent 26 days total at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis while doctors worked to find a cause for her constant vomiting and fluid buildup around the lungs. It was an extremely emotional and stressful period of time and we are extremely thankful that she has been able to come home, unfortunately still vomiting numerous times a day.
Abigail is one of the strongest people I know, even after everything she's been through, she still smiles and made many “friends” at the hospital (one night wanting to color pictures for all the babies and hand them out)!!!!
She said, “When I get big I want to come take care of all the babies here.” I said, “Oh you’re going to be a nurse.” She said, “No mom, a doctor!”
Abby has a long road of recovery ahead of her and requires many trips back to Minneapolis to monitor the heart and lungs. Many have asked how they can help so we are creating Abby’s Fund to help with the medical costs and others not covered by insurance. Time off of work for appointments, parking, gas, etc…Contribute what you can or pass it along and we will be forever grateful for your generosity!
