Accessible Bathroom Remodel

Hi, my name is Mary Jo Stump, with Hemmerling as my maiden name. My husband, Dave, has been in a wheelchair for over 40 yrs due to a sledding accident when he was just 20 y.o. Five years ago, he was diagnosed with a stage 4 wound on his bottom area, which is exacerbated by using a wheelchair. Maintaining hygiene is crucial, but with our current bathroom set-up, Dave needs to sit and slide on the edge of the tub to get in and out. Unfortunately, this is contributing to the wound failing to heal. In addition, he's not getting any younger, and from a safety standpoint, the bathroom needs to be remodeled for improved accessibility.

When it comes to my story - my life changed significantly about 5 yrs ago when I had a total knee replacement. I thought it would all be so simple as I had already undergone the operation four yrs prior on my left knee. It was NOT so simple. My knee got infected with a bug that would be impossible to kill. I fought that bug for 3 yrs, underwent nine surgeries, numerous PICC lines and many hours of physical therapy. The docs told me they no longer had antibiotics to kill that bug and I was faced with a horrible decision. I had to decide to keep fighting a hopeless battle or get on with my life with an amputation. The right leg was amputated almost at the hip. I am acclimating, learning to walk again, and living in a wheelchair.

So, in our household, with both of us wheelchair-bound, we NEED a bathroom that will accommodate a roll-in type shower. We have an estimate for $11,500 for a new shower. We would also like to put in a pedestal sink to improve the function of the WC bath. We kindly ask if you have the means, to consider donating to our fund to help this remodel come true!
