Welcome Home Alex!

I am a father of a 23 year old man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). If you have ever purchased a Shamrock at the store to support MDA or have ever watched the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon, then you have heard of Muscular Dystrophy.   Muscular Dystrophy is a degenerative mutation muscle disorder that primarily affects males with loss of motor function in the limbs and a continuation of deterioration in the later adult years.  My son was born with this debilitating mutation and has struggled through his life in dealing with the loss of his strength. He now is inspired to live out his adult life as an independent man within a home which he can be free to move around in.  We have been blessed with some donated property  and are in the planning stage to build him a home that will fit his needs. Alex is doing the house plan drawings himself and working with me in developing the architectural design to fit his needs. This build will be from the ground up and will require a 900 ft driveway to get to the property for the build to begin. I am small business owner that works in the construction industry and have many resources that have already volunteered to help build this house. I just mainly need help with the funds to provide the materials. With this home, there will be a need for adaptive equipment and technology to allow him his independence and freedom to move throughout the home. We will be designing and installing some really cool tech into this home to accommodate his needs. With the design and the technology going into this, we hope that this will also be a model for the future home building and can help others that have special physical needs. In the future, this home will be made available to others with physical disabilities. It will also be used for research and awareness in designing a better home that can address the needs of people with disabilities. The ultimate goal is to take any funds received in excess of the cost of the project and establish a non-profit to further our cause to help those with physical disabilities to achieve a better means of living independent in their own homes. I want so much to change the way we all look at construction and change the industry to designing and developing communities that are prepared for future residents that would have a physical disability. Alex is so full of life and loves reading, music, animals and hanging out with his family and friends.  Anyone who meets him walks away with a smile on their face and a fresh perspective.
