Accessible Transportation for Ruth's Birthday!!!
Donation protected
Ruth's legs need wheels:
Ruth has been diagnosed with early-onset osteo-arthritis, often needing to walk with a cane these days due to intense pain in her legs and joints.
Public transportation is not always sufficient or accessible (and as a visible trans woman, is not always safe in a city where, lately, homophobic violence has been on the rise).
With her 25th birthday approaching, this fundraiser will help pay for a cheap used car, and any raised above the goal will go towards the expenses of maintenance and insurance.
Ruth is on a *very* tight budget:
Ever since needing to cut out her (abusive and/or Jehovah's Witness) family at age 17, Ruth has been working hard to support herself financially on her own.
Over the past two years though, she has had to significantly cut back her work hours, having been medically advised to keep external stress to a minimum, so as to not keep dangerously exacerbating her physical and mental health/PTSD or inducing pain flare-ups.
She is in the beginning stages of applying for SSI disability income (often a 3 year process), and in the meantime is surviving off of roughly 400/month as a loving childcare provider (a vehicle will also help open up childcare possibilities) while living in an unfinished (and moldy) backyard tool shed and attending frequent doctor's visits.
Scraping by with barely enough to cover her most basic expenses, the idea of purchasing, maintaining, and insuring a vehicle has been a far-off pipe-dream for Ruth, regardless of how desperately needed it has become with her degenerative joint conditions.
As her caring and supportive extended community, though, we can make it happen.
If you know Ruth personally, you know how much of a generous spirit she has. Whether she's organizing for class liberation, patiently caring for the kids in her life, or being an amazingly supportive friend and partner, Ruth gives endlessly to community without asking for anything in return.
Please donate whatever you can. Every dollar counts! Accessible transportation will greatly reduce Ruth's day-to-day struggles with pain, health, access, safety from harassment, and poverty. It's her birthday, and J.W.-raised kids don't get to have birthdays, so let's make this one extra sweet! Thank you so much.
