================================
Asexuality is the story of my life.
It’s a one-woman musical comedy about growing up knowing there was a stark difference between who I was, and who I was always told I was supposed to be. It’s about identifying as asexual–a part of the queer spectrum that is often misunderstood (or even completely invisible)–as well as taking my first steps into embracing myself as a trans woman.
Asexuality! The Solo Musical won TOP OF THE FRINGE and BEST WORLD PREMIERE at the Hollywood Fringe Festival last year, as well as an official selection for the SOARING SOLO STARS SERIES and the JOSHUA TREE SOLO FESTIVAL Desert Salon. I'm honored to know that this show has already resonated with so many people, and I'm thrilled to be bringing it to a larger audience!
Writing this show was a healing process for me, and through performing it I have learned that it’s healing for others too. I’ve always felt that the best writing strives to understand its villains, and through humanizing my own antagonists–whether they be toxic people from my life, or my own internalized self-hatred–I have begun to understand and forgive them. And every joke in my show is a victory over the darkness and adversity I’ve faced.
The world is a scary place for queer people right now, especially those of us in the trans community. 2023 has seen hundreds of bills specifically targeting the trans community introduced into state legislatures all over the United States–everything from denying us life-saving health care to legalizing people attacking us in bathrooms. And the right-wing hatred of us is certainly not limited to the US. But the rhetoric behind it all stems from a lack of understanding about the queer community–who we are as people.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival isn’t *just* a great opportunity for me as a writer and performer. It’s a way for me to fight against the injustices facing my community the best way I can–with my art. I truly feel that the best way to change the world is to change attitudes, and the best way I can do that right now is to bring Asexuality to an international audience of artists, theatergoers, and industry professionals at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Producing a show at the Edinburgh Fringe is a massive undertaking with lots of costs, including:
- Theater rental: $3,000
- Publicity & Marketing: $6,000
- Festival fees: $4,000
- Travel: $1,500
- Lodging: $1,500
- Other miscellaneous expenses
To do it right, I’ll need your help!
I want to thank my parents for their continued love and support, my director Heather Dowling for bringing this show to life, my producer Jessica Lynn Johnson for her amazing guidance, Lisa Verlo for making this dream possible, Jim Martyka and Greg and Jenn Crafts for their limitless Fringe wisdom, Laser Malena-Webber for his patience and advice, and the Soaring Solo community for being such an amazing collective of artists. I also want to thank those who helped me create the video segments of my show–Lee Pollero, Amanda Lehan, Liesl Jackson, Carly Tsuda, Travis Joe Dixon, Erin McShane, Rogue Bonaventura, and Ashley Rowe.
