Acupuncturist Jed Michael Injured, Unable to Work

Imagine your hands so injured you could not work. Ten days ago our acupuncture colleague Jed Michael was involved in a life changing car accident. He was driving his 8 and 10 year old children home from camp when a tractor trailer in the next lane hit a car and jackknifed into his lane. He didn’t have time to stop and his car went under the back of the 18 wheeler.

Luckily his children were in the backseat and escaped major injury. When you see pictures of his car, you understand that Jed was also incredibly lucky but did not come out unscathed. Both hands were on the steering wheel and suffered crush injuries as the vehicle’s cabin collapsed. The bones of the 4th finger of his dominant hand were pulverized, numerous tendons in both hands lacerated and ripped off the bone. Numerous muscles were also lacerated and torn from the bone. He required an initial 6 hours of reconstructive surgery on his hands to install a fair amount of hardware and clean out impacted debris. He is missing a piece of thumb and much of the posterior 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers, which will require additional surgeries to graft and rebuild the missing tissue.
