Adam Luna's Continued Treatment and Recovery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Dalia Luna and I am starting this GoFundMe for my brother, Adam Luna who underwent a kidney transplant which consisted of many complications. Adam still has a long road ahead of him and he is experiencing issues with his recovery and insurance. I’d like Adam and his wife to be able to get the care that Adam needs to focus on his recovery without worrying about hospital bills. Please take the time to read his story below:
Adam was on a donor list for 7 1/2 years and some of the delay or missed opportunities were because being on dialysis takes a huge toll on your body and health. The past several years Adam has experienced ailment after ailment. We were surprised to discover, while on a donor waiting list, they’ll remove you from the donor list if you become ill. Adam was removed from the waiting list on several occasions.
On November 20, 2021, my brother Adam Luna finally received the call for a kidney. Once he received the call, he had a 2-hour window to arrive at the hospital for the standard testing. Adam was a match, and he couldn’t have been any happier to begin his journey to having a normal and extended life. At the time, he had no idea of the turn of events that would take place to hinder his recovery.
Adam went into surgery and six hours later he was in the recovery room, and all seemed well. The first couple days seemed normal, and the kidney showed promise. His amazing wife, Selene never left his side. She had been there to help him get out of bed and walk. She even fed him and gave him something to drink, as Adam was not capable of feeding himself. On the third day, Adam started to display signs of a fever and did not seem himself. He was disoriented and lacked color. Adam had been sitting in a chair slouched over when he asked his wife for assistance getting back into bed. Selene could see he was not doing well and was uncomfortable assisting him. Selene called for the nurses to help Adam. When the nurses assisted Adam in standing, his incision began to leak. Once in bed, Adam’s nurse began to clean the incision and realized that it was abnormal discharge. As Adam laid there running a fever and disoriented, he had no knowledge of that all the nurses came rushing into his room. He was experiencing Atrial Fibrillation. This gained him a trip to the intensive care unit.
During his stay in the ICU he had two more surgeries. One to locate the location of the abnormal drainage which came with a completely new 7-inch incision. The other surgery was to make sure they clean his abdomen well and install a wound vacuum at the original transplant incision. This surgery the doctors decided to leave the huge incision open. The doctors also discovered that Adam had been retaining water when his ankle blistered and burst open. The wound vacuum was to expel some of the water retention. We believe the abnormal drainage caused Adam’s kidney function to deteriorate and he had to undergo a dialysis treatment which contributed to prolonging his recovery. Thanksgiving came and went, and Adam was stable enough to be moved into a regular hospital room. He was doing much better, but he was still in a lot of pain and heavily sedated. An infection was detected, and his kidney function was still less than they wanted. Three weeks in the hospital pass before his new kidney would start functioning more reliably and discussions of a release began.
Friday Dec 10th, Adam’s wound vacuum was switched out for a portable vac. He was released from the hospital. The hospital was able to supply him with some supplies, but it was not enough to make it through the weekend.
Monday, Dec 13th was my brother’s first visit with his transplant team. Sadly, Adam did not return home with us. At the visit, the decision was made to take another look at the drainage coming from his open wound and intentions to apply sutures to his transplant incision to close the wound. In order to get immediate care rather than scheduling that could take months, it was instructed to enter through the emergency room so they could attend to him quickly. After spending an entire day in the Emergency Room, Adam was admitted to the hospital, once again. While Adam waited for blood work results, x-rays of Adams lower abs and hip area were taken to determine why Adam was in so much pain and unable to walk on his own. Doctors discovered that the new kidney is resting on a muscle with lots of nerves connected to his leg. Then mentioned that the pain may never go away. Perhaps, it would get a little better as he heals but there was no guarantee. They also discovered a hematoma, inguinal hernia, soft tissue infection and signs of acute transplant rejection.
Doctors decided to hold off on sutures until he was started on anti-biotics.
December 15th, Adam was scheduled for his 4th surgery to close the kidney transplant incision and replace his wound vacuum. The doctors explained that the surgery went well but they had to scrape all the dead cells from his open wound, which meant it was a very rough operation for him and as if he had another kidney transplant. Adam’s hospital stay consisted of strong antibiotics and wound treatment for both his leg and abdomen but there were no signs of his new kidney function improving until the week of Christmas. By the grace of God, Adam’s kidney function, abdomen drainage and leg began to improve.
On December 24th Adam was released from the hospital and was able to spend Christmas with his family. They sent him home to us with a different wound vacuum that stopped working a week after being released from the hospital. Doctors decided to remove the wound vacuum. Which brings us to the recent events. Adam's transplant incision is still expelling of significant amount of drainage. It has been 1.5 months since my brother’s transplant and a total of 4 surgeries, my brother is still experiencing a significant amount of pain, unable to walk on his own and continued issues with his appetite. He’s down approximately 30 lbs. There are more tests are being scheduled to determine why my brother continues to have drainage and his doctors have indicated that Adam may have to undergo another surgery.
I’m asking if could please find it in your heart to donate to cover expenses so that Adam can receive the care that is needed for full recovery without worry.
Please help me raise money for my brother by share this post.
