The fantastic news is that I have been accepted into two summer programs this year! The Miami Music Festival has quickly become one of the most renowned summer music festivals in the country. I had the chance to work with their director of vocal studies back in November and he totally changed my approach to singing in only eleven days. Now I have the chance to study with him for three weeks as well as getting to perform in one of the great masterworks of the canon, Bizet's "Carmen". I have also been accepted into the inaugural iteration of the Boston Wagner Institute. This it a ten day program which is being directed by Jane Eaglen, one of the premiere Wagner sopranos of our generation. Hosted at New England Conservatory, it is sure to be ten days of the focused, high-intensity study required for me to take the next step to having a career in opera.
Here is the less fantastic news:
Tuition for these programs totals nearly $6,000 dollars. I had originally planned to do only one festival this summer but both of these opportunities were simply too good to pass up.
Things get worse. Two weeks after I had paid the deposit for both of these programs the coronavirus pandemic began. I have since lost a job with St. Stephen's Episcopal church because services are no longer being held. My full-time job is also now being shut down for at least two weeks because of a stay-at-home order issued in Minnesota. I understand this global crisis is affecting many people, but it is in times like this where the arts become even more important.
