Addiction Exposed:

A Date for Anya is a drama about a dedicated wife who, after coming to terms with her husband’s addiction, wants to help redeem him. This story is about addiction, divorce, recovery and restoration. It tackles the topic of one form of addiction people rarely get support for... sexual addiction. Daring to show the devastation and root cause of one man's sex addiction as seen through the eyes of a dedicated wife, Anya.

The power of addiction over some people’s lives is palatable. So many people get caught up in harmless behaviors at first, only to find themselves at the end of a relationship. That’s a consequence of process addictions. But there is hope. This drama explores one man’s addiction and how it impacts his and his wife’s relationship. Telling the story through a series of flashbacks is a chosen technique to relay how trauma may have set itself firmly in a person’s psyche and allowed some behaviors to grow out of control.

Filmmaker's Background:

As a filmmaker, I wanted to write a story based on some truths. While it is cathartic to see one’s words come to life, it also sparks the thought of how one’s story could be helpful to others. Through the characters' lives, the film watcher explores sound psychological theories about the nature of addiction. Putting together such a film means care and collaboration at many stages.

Trauma can affect anyone... and sometimes it can lead to addictive behaviors. Yet, there is hope for wholeness and restoration with guidance. I have been broken a few times in my own life, and my stories are about the journey out of that brokenness. Through the art of filmmaking, stories can help heal.

We have already created a couple of trailers this past season and many behind-the-scenes character profiles and interviews. Now we need to raise funds to make the actual film. We did it this way to show the quality level we want to achieve in production design, acting and music.

Risks & Challenges of Making this Kind of Film:

This topic of sex addiction seems either taboo or told comically or without compassion for all parties involved. While this is a hero’s journey for Anya, the charter of Rick goes through a transformation. That is why we say it is a story about addiction, divorce, recovery and, ultimately, restoration.

This story dramatizes and clearly shows the depths of a journey for the characters at a time in our society when all kinds of boundaries are being challenged. However, consent is the current litmus test for any of these actions. A conversation about consent and what it means to not understand it or ignore it is due in these times. We are encouraging people to reach out before becoming a victim or before becoming an offender.

We can make a tangible difference in people's lives who want help… and through telling a fictitious narrative that deals squarely with sexual addiction, we compassionately preserve the dignity of those seeking to better themselves.
