When your baby is diagnosed with a life-altering condition, your world shatters. But then, you gather every ounce of strength to fight. And this is our battle for Alex.
The day Alex was placed in my arms, Dave and I felt an indescribable joy. Despite already having two incredible children, Ryan and Ella, Alex's arrival completed our family's picture-perfect puzzle. Bringing him home to Rathnew, where his siblings doted on him endlessly, was a dream come true. But our bubble of happiness was soon pierced by the arrival of Covid and subsequent lockdown.
With no developmental checks available, I began to notice discrepancies in Alex's milestones. He struggled to do what came effortlessly to Ryan and Ella. Despite attempts to convince myself otherwise, the feeling that something wasn't right gnawed at me. The fight for answers began, a grueling battle against doctors' skepticism and a never-ending cycle of scans and tests.
The diagnosis of Periventricular Leukomalacia and two chromosomal deletions shattered our hopes and dreams for Alex's future. The shock of that moment still haunts us, leaving us with more questions than answers.
Despite his incredible resilience and small victories like crawling and kneeling, we face the harsh reality of Alex's profound disabilities. But amidst the pain and uncertainty, one thing remains unwavering - our determination to provide Alex with a home that caters to his every need. It's a daunting task, one that requires swallowing our pride and asking for help. But for Alex, there's no other option. He deserves the world, and we'll move mountains to give it to him.
