Aelan Neurosurgical Team - Saving Lives in the Solomon Islands
We are seeking your assistance in facilitating a Medical Care Mission to treat Solomon Islanders. We were recently approached by the Solomon Islands Government in their urgent need for medical assistance.
The Solomon Islands, home to nearly seven hundred thousand people, grapples with a critical deficit in Neurosurgical services. This shortfall leaves a significant number of patients in urgent need of specialized treatment. Regrettably, due to this limited access, patients are succumbing to medical conditions that would have been treated promptly in countries like Australia.
Not only do many patients need urgent medical attention specific to neurosurgery but they also need improved access to basic medical care.
Our collaborative team from Sydney's Nepean, Macquarie University, and Hawkesbury hospitals in Australia is driven by a collective objective: to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals requiring specialised care. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services of the Solomon Islands has issued a request for help in conducting life-saving surgery that is currently inaccessible.
Our mission is to have an immediate and life-changing positive impact on the patients and families we will be treating, whilst also training and educating the local healthcare workers on the medical and nursing management of future patients requiring this care.
Goal
Our mission is to maximize our fundraising efforts, ensuring that we can fully support our dedicated volunteers. With your generous contributions, we can cover essential travel expenses, provide comprehensive education and training materials, and secure vital medical equipment and medications for our upcoming missions
But this is more than just a one-time effort; it's an ongoing commitment to deliver specialized healthcare, valuable local training, and essential education to our Pacific neighbours.
Your support today is an investment in a brighter, healthier tomorrow for those who need it most. Join us in making a difference.
Our Commitment
Doctor Narko Tutuo, a Solomon Islander now working and living in Australia, has been part of multiple visiting teams that have provided medical treatment to Solomon Islanders in the past. Together with Dr Matthew Tait (Head of Neurosurgery at Nepean Hospital), they have collated a team of doctors and specialist nurses to provide care to patients requiring specialist neurosurgical procedures.
Furthermore, these volunteers are committed to the training and education of local Solomon Island healthcare workers in order to support the care of these and future patients until the next trip is confirmed.
We are fortunate enough to have corporate sponsors from the healthcare sector donate essential medications and medical equipment however, we are seeking additional support to help facilitate this mission
Our Team
There is currently a team of 8 doctors and 8 nurses, being led by Drs Matthew Tait and Narko Tutuo.
Dr Matthew Tait is a Consultant Neurosurgeon; a Fellow of both the Royal College of Australasian Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). He is Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Nepean Hospital and is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Macquarie University Hospital. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University.
Dr. Narko Tutuo, a Paediatric Consultant Anaesthetist at Nepean Hospital, is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. His extensive clinical journey encompasses diverse healthcare environments, reflecting his adaptability and expertise. Notably, he spent two years as a Visiting Instructor at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, University of Michigan (USA). While Dr. Tutuo's primary focus is on paediatric anaesthesia, he brings a high level of competence to various subspecialties, with the exception of cardiac surgery. His dedication to the medical profession extends beyond patient care; he is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Dr. Tutuo actively engages in the education and training of Trainee Anaesthetists and junior doctors, exemplifying his passion for advancing medical knowledge and skills among his peers. Both doctors have collated a team of like-minded individuals to support the goals of this visit. This diverse team includes healthcare professionals from various Sydney hospitals, encompassing a range of medical and nursing expertise.
Their collective mission is to provide specialised neurosurgical and medical care to a regional area of need, provide training and education to local healthcare professionals and develop an ongoing relationship for future visits.
Your support is the lifeline that can help us save the lives of those who need it most. Join us in this mission and be the driving force behind saving the lives of those in critical need.
