Affordable Aircraft Style Car HUD

We are a team of multiple university students from a diverse range of backgrounds. We have all been involved in many university programs and are no strangers to building things. Combined, our experience ranges from electronics to software programming. We are ready to build, we just need your help.

Heads up displays (HUDs) are an existing piece of technology that has only been found in fighter jets and state of the art military equipment. This technology allows the pilot to view complicated information without detracting from situation awareness. Many companies in the past have tried to bring this technology to cars, however, all implementations have suffered from severe limitations. Most HUDs that are integrated with the car all have very limited viewing angles and have incredibly small displays. Other aftermarket HUDs are either too dim to be seen in daylight or are awkwardly positioned such that it is uncomfortable to use.

Using more powerful projectors, better materials, and some clever optics, we believe we believe we can create a HUD which overcomes these limitations. We have currently finished research and designing, what remains is to build and test a prototype. This is where you come in! We need your help to acquire the materials to build the prototype. Any money we raise will be used to buy the materials needed for the prototype.

Our hud will create a semi-transparent image in front of the driver which displays all the necessary information a driver needs to view including speed limits, hazard warnings, GPS directions and even the rev meter and current speed of the car. This allows for the driver to view these things without diverting attention from the road. Future models can even implement an infrared camera to detect the road through fog or low visibility conditions and paint it over the line of sight of the driver allowing for a safer driving experience.

A projector that fits our specifications, $245 USD ($312 AUD)
An interfacing board compatible with the projector, $200 USD ($320 AUD).
The housing for the projector and electronics, $60 AUD.

The remainder of the money will be used to purchase various types of glass to be used for the combiner lens. Due to the complex techniques required to manufacture those, it is very likely that $600 AUD is spent on this aspect.

Anything left will be used to cover shipping and other miscellaneous fees.

We believe this technology will make Head-Up Displays a staple in all modern cars and thereby permanently improve the driving experience. You can be a part of this development too. Any donation is appreciated and will be put to use in the development of this technology.
