Margo’s Marathon Fundraiser for Afghan Girls’ Education

This October, I will be running the Marine Corps Marathon in hopes of raising awareness and funds for girls’ education in Afghanistan. I will be running on behalf of the End Gender Apartheid Campaign. Please read more below:

Afghanistan is the only country where women and girls are legally barred from attending school or university. The Taliban have denied them the right to education, employment, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, access to justice, and eventhe practice of art or culture. Women and girls cannot even visit parks or participate in sports activities.

 

Since they took power on August 15, 2021, women and girls in Afghanistan have been dehumanized and effectively imprisoned within their homes. The horrible trajectory this sets for their lives may not be reversible. They describe their experience as "Gender Apartheid" and are calling for it to be criminalized.Shouldn't the legal ban on girls attending school be considered a crime? How can we stand by while the future of countless young women is stolen away under the guise of law?

 

They need global solidarity to change the situation in Afghanistan by condemning, codifying, and criminalizing the dehumanization of women. This is not just about Afghanistan; the complete stripping of every woman’s dignity in that country constitutes a global human rights crisis.

 

Meanwhile, under the strict oppression of the Taliban, an internationally recognized terrorist group, women are resisting by running underground schools for as many girls as they can. Here, I am conducting fundraising for one of these underground schools, which provides education for girls who are otherwise forbidden from attending school.
