Afghan journalist escaped the Taliban
Fatema Hosseini is an Afghan journalist who risked her life to report to the world the important stories of women in Afghanistan as the Taliban took over. Because of the critical work she did for an Afghan news agency and as a freelancer for USA TODAY, because she is a young, educated woman, because she is a truth teller -- she became a target.
Amid the fresh shock of Kabul’s fall, an escape plan was underway. But the chaos and crowds outside the airport didn’t account for plans. There were moments Fatema thought they would kill her. There were moments she thought she could not move forward another step. But she did.
Thanks to her inimitable courage and the selflessness and heroism of the U.S. and foreign officials, USA TODAY worked with a network of contacts to get first Fatema and then her mother, father, brother and baby sister out of Afghanistan and into Ukraine, at the time a safe third country.
Now, Fatema and her family need your help.
As Fatema works to make the U.S. her new home, she is helping her family who've escaped Kyiv and are now in Poland. Any donations will help Fatema resettle her family, who've now fled two wars in six months.
The world needs more journalists like Fatema. Please help her as she continues to inspire us and generations of Afghan women in the face of oppression.
