Background

The year 2020 was an overlapping of various crises including economic hardships, public health in the midst of a global pandemic, and growing tension in race relations. As a result of these converging dilemmas, nationwide demonstrations ensued focused on the aspect of race. This civil unrest triggered an American uprising on the topic of racial injustice and evoked a passion within many people to address this issue.

Local Response

For this reason, hundreds of Summit County residents joined together for a Solidarity Walk on June 1, 2020 in downtown Breckenridge, Colorado because they wanted to collectively encourage positive action to triumph over the unjust adversity experienced within humanity. Since that time, Solidarity Nation was established and there have been monthly gatherings in Summit County to openly and positively discuss various aspects of race relations.

Solidarity Nation

Solidarity Nation was founded by Alexandria Nicole, a local Breckenridge business owner and community leader with a passion and skill to bring people together in a positive way for discussion and action. Solidarity Nation hosts monthly community conversations, called the Solidarity Talks, where diverse community members discuss topics such as Clarity for Misconceptions, Critical Race Theory and What does it feel like to be WELCOME?. The objective is to learn from one another, bridge the gaps that separate us, and identify local action steps.

Solidarity Nation has partnered with various local organizations including the Breckenridge Tourism Office, Breck Film Fest and Lake Dillon Theatre to make these imperative discussions accessible to the locals of Summit County. Alexandria was also selected for the Breckenridge Social Equity Advisory Commission and now serves as the Chair of the Commission.

Project Summary and Purpose

Solidarity Nation plans to produce a documentary to chronicle these experiences and spark further conversation and action. After The Protest will examine the Solidarity Walk that took place in 2020 and how it changed the lives of so many. This 45-minute participatory documentary will be an interview-style film that captures the amazing impact that day had on various community members and examine the essence of how this one event created a ripple of action in the community. The script has been drafted, and Solidarity Nation is seeking financial and pro bono assistance in the production of the documentary.

The ultimate goal of After The Protest is to educate people on how peacefully protesting is a powerful catalyst for sustainable change and to serve as a tool to initiate conversation on actions to move change forward in our community and beyond.

Cost/Fundraising Plans

The cost to make this film for pre production, shooting, stock imagery, legal support, licensed music, producer, producer/director and post production editing.
