Put a Roof Over Percy's Head

Donation protected
Since about 2012, I have been communicating off and on through FB chat with a young man in Nigeria. His name is Percy. He is a member of my church and during that time, he served a two year mission and has completed college. He majored in Chemistry. He now teaches school. He has been able to do that largely because his single mother has sacrificed ALL so that her children could be educated.  His father abandoned them just after Percy was born. He has several siblings as well.

Over the years, Percy and I collaborated on Sunday School lessons as both of us were Gospel Doctrine teachers at the same time.  In our church, the lessons are synchronized across the world.  So, we helped each other with lessons and talked about many, many things. Percy has a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and desires to serve him in any way he can.  For him, it is all about being able to serve. I have grown to love his sweet testimony and desire to succeed in life and serve in the church.

Just this last week for the first time, he sent me a video.  It was this video of his living conditions.  In all these years, he has never told me how difficult life was, especially for his mother, in this detail.  I knew that they struggled.  I knew that they ate mostly yams everyday as their main staple in their diet.  I knew he was often hungry, but I had no idea that they had no toilet in their home and had to use their neighbors!  I had no idea that they had no roof on their home and when it rained that their bed was soaked.  I had no idea that they didn’t have doors or windows!

I have lived among those that had much more than they needed.  I have lived among those that had much less than they needed, but I have never seen anything like this.

So as a family, we decided that we needed to help Percy and his family.  Our dollar goes a long way in Nigeria, especially for housing, which is very inexpensive there compared to food, which is pretty comparably priced to our prices.

This last weekend, we had a garage sale and we raised $500.  This will provide Percy and his family with plumbing and a toilet for his humble home.  He says “$3,000 will give our home a massive facelift and electricity. $1,000 per annum will get you a decent apartment for a small family here.”

Here is more of our conversation: “My mum bought the building as an uncompleted building almost 30 years ago. She couldn't afford to finish the project. We lived in a comfortable rented apartment until she couldn't afford to pay rent so we had no choice but to move into this present building 15 years ago.”

I would like to raise enough money for Percy and his family to get the “massive facelift” that he needs for his families’ home.  I would love to have you join me.
