Im reaching out to all friends and family! My brother, Travis, has been dealing with really bad sores on both legs, for the past 3 yrs. It all started as a little cut from a pallet at his past job. Thinking that it would heal....it did not. It soon became bigger as time went on. He later on noticed another one on his other leg. In theses past 3yrs he has 3 in total. Being stubborn and scared to what a doctor might say he didn't go get checked out. Not to mention no health insurance being the main problem . During this whole time Travis would spend $260 or well over that each month since the beginning to keep his legs clean from bacteria and infection. He would wrap them clean them every single day. There's been a few episodes that he couldn't get one of the sores to stop bleeding and he has blacked out from blood loss. Also times where his legs are hurting him so bad he can't walk.
Finally, August 4th, he went in to the UW emergency room. Ive told him so many times Just go in! Thank God he did. I think he just finally had enough and that he was 'tired'. So, being in the ER they did blood tests and biopsys.. talked with a few Dr's including a wound care specialist and a Dermatologist. The verdict was in and he has Pyoderma Gangrenosum.
(Pyoderma gangrenosum is a condition that causes tissue to become necrotic, causing deep ulcers that usually occur on the legs. When they occur, they can lead to chronic wounds. Ulcers usually initially look like small bug bites or papules, and they progress to larger ulcers. Though the wounds rarely lead to death, they can cause pain and scarring. Though the etiology is not well understood, the disease is thought to be due to immune system dysfunction, and particularly improper functioning of neutrophils. For instance, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple myeloma (MM) have all been associated with pyoderma gangrenosum. It can also be part of a syndromes such as PAPA syndrome. One hallmark of pyoderma gangrenosum is pathergy, which is the appearance of new lesions at sites of trauma. ) This could very well be caused from rheumatoid arthritis which Travis has. He stayed at the hospital for almost 3 nights. They put him on a steroid that would help with the PG. He is anemic so he needs to take Iron and a few other meds. My brother has a full-time job but still on his probationary period. Since he went to the UW he hasn't been back to work yet due to healing process. Still no insurance and doesn't qualify for Badgercare assistance. While in the ER a social worker had came to talk with Travis and give him paperwork to fill out for Community Care(help w/medical) When he was transferred to a room those papers never made it to his other room. He had called and tried to get into contact with the social worker so he can get another set of those papers sent to him.
Our mother and myself have helped as much as we can with getting the things he needs for his wound care needs and have the funds for living expenses. Spending over $260 a month the past 3yrs is a lot of money.
My reasoning for this fund is to help with medical bills, prescriptions, and gauze/wrap ect.. for keeping his legs clean and for healing. He will need to find a good follow up doctor as well for future check ups for his health. He has a appointment with the dermatologist coming up soon!
Any small amount helps tremendously! I care a lot for my brother and his health! Let's just keep Travis in our thoughts and prayers for a fast healing recovery!
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this. God bless!
