Tragic Twist of Koorosh’s family!
After living briefly in Montreal, Maryam Rashidi and her husband Ahmad Nourani Shallo moved to Calgary to work for an oil and gas engineering firm to provide a better life for their son Koorosh. They were both laid off within the economic downturn of Alberta. However, she was so determined to fight for that good life in Canada for her son that she had always hoped to achieve. Two weeks later, Maryam took a job at two gas stations, one at Centex, dividing her time between them to make a full-time salary to bring food on the table and pay the rent on their southeast basement apartment. Sunday June 7, 2015 was only her third and last shift! Trying to stop a $113 fuel theft she was hit and run over by Joshua Mitchell when he accelerated to run over her with the hulking, powerful stolen Ford F-350. At 35, her aspirations were cut short when she was pronounced dead in hospital on June 9, 2015, two days after suffering severe injuries following her organs being donated to 6 Calgarians!
Mitchell has been convicted of manslaughter in early May 2017. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for the end of August 2017.
Ahmad, on the other hand, devastated and unemployed with no family in Canada moved away from Calgary with Koorosh after Maryam was killed. He moved to Vancouver with his 6-year-old Koorosh to start life again in his newly adopted home of Canada. He didn’t know very many people in Calgary at the time of Maryam’s death, having been in Calgary less than a year, but Calgarians know them pretty well now! Maryam’s tragedy was so emotional for Ahmad that he could never make it to attend the criminal hearings. He then decided to return to visit Maryam’s gravesite at the second anniversary of her death. In a tragic turn of events, on June 8, 2017 Ahmad was killed in a car crash near Golden B.C. His new wife, Somayeh, is still in recovery and may need several months to feel back to normal. Thank God Koorosh is physically Ok, but he definitely needs to see a psychologist for the loss of his parents. Too much for an 8 year-old kid to go through all this pain! He is in the care of his grandparents and a family friend (the fund organizer) in Vancouver at the moment, but it’s not clear what will happen to him now.
Ahmad’s parents are in B.C. and are working on the funeral arrangements to take his corpse back to Iran. Also, they will have to go through the legal custody process of Koorosh.
After all, Koorosh is the one who is going to suffer a lot, but he probably whispers his mom’s words every time he remembers her saying: “We will pass these tough days! We will fight and at the end we will have a better life here dear son!”
It’s time for Canada in general and Calgary in particular to give back to Maryam and help the family go smoothly through this much suffering by helping their lonely kid Koorosh. The family is in urgent need of your help to pay Ahmad’s rent, lawyers’ fees, Ahmad’s corpse transfer arrangements to his hometown, and above all Koorosh’s daily living costs until the court makes a decision knowing that his step mom is still in recovery.
